O Wad Some Pow’r the Giftie Gie Us

Mister Don makes his entrance into the office.  He holds his head high, perhaps a  bit too high.  His shoulders are pulled back and his back is straight. Speaking in a deep calm voice, he bids the staff ‘Good Morning’.

He thinks the staff is looking at a respectable gentleman.  He thinks they are ‘his people’.

In fact, everyone who works with, for, or by him,  sees him as a pathetic drunk.

It’s funny to watch Don.  He has no idea how people view him.   He thinks they listen when he speaks.   He thinks his ideas are grabbed as chocolate.    Seeing Don in reality reminds me of that Robert Burns poem, which is quoted in the Title.

Translating it from the Scottish to Standard English;

And would some Power give us the gift
To see ourselves as others see us!
It would from many a blunder free us,
And foolish notion:
What airs in dress and gait would leave us,
And even devotion!

The poem is called ‘To a Louse’.

Apparently it was written by Burns when he saw a snobby  upper class lady in church, with   a louse roaming around on her hat.   Humorously, he chastises the bug for not realising how important his host is.

Of course, he isn’t just speaking about a pretentious woman with her snout in the air, unaware she has bug crawling on her bonnet.  He is warning everyone to lose the snobby superior attitude.

What would happen to Don if he could hear the thoughts, if he knew that the staff did not look up to him but down?

Would he stop drinking?  Would he stop acting as if he knew it all?  Would he roll into a ball in shame?

Right now, unable to see or hear himself as the staff does, he continues to bestride the office as a colossus, not hearing the giggles in his wake.
