In the good old days one never heard of a nuclear family where just the parents and children lived under a roof. There were normally paternal grandparents and sometimes even great grandparents. There was a common law that everyone followed and clashes were few and far between.
In the joint family system elders ruled the roost and their word was law. The younger generation did not have any exposure to learning beyond their class room and what their elders taught them. They say ignorance is bliss and that is how the youngsters never resisted what was law that was laid by the elders. This is history now.
The youngsters now think for themselves resulting in clashing of thoughts. They have their own tastes, their own lifestyle which the elders do not understand or want to understand. The youngsters are now exposed to so much learning that they find the old school of thought ridiculous.
With this background, the nuclear family system was born.
Ideally speaking a joint family system could be the best provided the two generations pool in their thoughts and have a common platform to live their life. This is very rare. No need to emphasize the benefits of a joint family when one can live in harmony.
While the nuclear family system gives one the freedom to choose a lifestyle it does have disadvantages too. The grand children never get to know their grand parents and grandparents never get to spend time with their grandchildren.Finding homes to live separately is becoming more and difficult what with the high cost of land and houses. Then there is the need to have family around in crisis situations which would have been possible in the joint family system.
But going by what we see despite all the disadvantages society’s choice is to go for the nuclear family system.
The nuclear family is here to stay.

We would have loved to have a setup with a granny flat for my inlaws so we could be close together, but still have space for each branch of the family as needed. I think a lot of North Americans are beginning to opt for this system as the grandparents get older. It's a good compromise between old & new :)
