Now I know why she is poor

I met up with my old friend yesterday for dinner.

We had a lot to catchup as we had not been seeing each other for a long time.

She is not working now, and she cannot find a job for a long time.

I told her that I would buy her dinner and let her chose the eating place.

She wanted to eat at a Japanese sushi restaurant.

That was the first time I had been to that particular restaurant.

She seemed very familiar with the types of sushi there.  She could even tell me the price of different sushi.

I was rather surprised.

The price was not low.  A few pieces of sushi could cost four dollars or more.

I could have a very filling meal of chicken rice set meal at this price. The chicken rice set meal will come with a soup, a plate of vegetables, a small plate of chicken and a big plate of rice.

I asked her why she is so familiar with the price list.

She said that she use to go there at least once a week.   She had, and still has, very good appetite.

She could easily eat 10 plates of sushi!

Now I really know why she is poor.  She spent all her money on eating out, and when she lost her job, and could not find another job for months, she had to ask her parents to support her.

Both her parents were not well educated, and they had to work very hard for their money.

Her father had retired, and he used to be a gardener for a large factory.  Her mother was still working as a cleaner in a factory.

It is really shameful for a well-educated professional woman in her late 30s to feed off her parents.

By the way, the dinner cost more than $40.  She did not dare to eat too much since I had told her about my budget.

If I did not let her know my budget for this meal, she would eat and eat, till the bill came up to a hundred dollars.

    • Poverty is a curse on earth and it is the creation of the politicians and they all are enemies to mankind. Poverty is the state for the majority of the world’s people and nations. Why is this? Is it enough to blame poor people for their own predicament? Have they been lazy, made poor decisions, and been solely responsible for their plight? What about their governments? Have they pursued policies that actually harm successful development? Such causes of poverty and inequality are no doubt real. But deeper and more global causes of poverty are often less discussed.

Behind the increasing interconnectedness promised by globalization are global decisions, policies, and practices. These are typically influenced, driven, or formulated by the rich and powerful. These can be leaders of rich countries or other global actors such as multinational corporations, institutions, and influential people.

In the face of such enormous external influence, the governments of poor nations and their people are often powerless. As a result, in the global context, a few get wealthy while the majority struggle.

I think these are the major causes of pverty all over the wolrd as Almost half the world — over 3 billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day.

The GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of the 41 Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (567 million people) is less than the wealth of the world’s 7 richest people combined.

Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.

Less than one per cent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn’t happen.

1 billion children live in poverty (1 in 2 children in the world). 640 million live without adequate shelter, 400 million have no access to safe water, 270 million have no access to health services. 10.6 million died in 2003 before they reached the age of 5 (or roughly 29,000 children per day).
