Not Letting People Pull Your Tongue

‘Pull my Tongue’  is a Jamaican expression which means allowing people to get you to say something or respond to something they say.   It is kind of a trick, kind of a setting up, in which you ‘throw words’ and I am supposed to reply.

Years ago, there was this big fat girl who had a ‘pick’ for me; that means she wanted to have a confrontation.  I didn’t want to know she existed.   She was a very unpleasant sort.

She was standing by my door, talking loud and brawling and it seemed she was talking about me.  I didn’t like it, but instead of saying anything, I took my cell phone, went out the window, and walked around where other people could see me, and pretended to be on the phone.

I could hear the gal going on and on, loud and annoying,  but I was pretending to talk on my cell, and other people saw me outside, on my cell, a bit too far for them to hear what I was saying, only catching a few words now and then.

After a time I pretended to text, then got back on the cell as if I were talking, and hearing the gal stop her brawling, came back to the room, from outside, passing her, not looking at her, having an expression on my face as if someone had asked me to find a document for them.

I passed the gal, went into my room, and silence reigned.  The gal had babbled for ten minutes to an empty room, while I was ‘totally’ unaware of it.

That was the end of the Gal’s attempt to pull my tongue, for having made a complete fool of herself, talking to an empty room, while everyone saw me outside on the phone, was just enough embarrassment to silence her.

She was trying to get me down to her level and engage in an argument with her.  Some people need this.  The only time they can feel ‘equal’ to another is if they are both rolling in the mud.

As I won’t roll in the mud one has to accept they are alone in the pig sty.

    • I dislike such people. I cannot stand them really, they can really annoy you. I have encountered such people who will always want to say things that will provoke you to say something. The best way to deal with such people is silence or ignoring them. I guess what you did was the best way to deal with that lady. Though I must say you regard her with so much contempt as much as she got you mad how can you say that she wasn't so pleasing. Anyway you alone know how she looked and how she reacted.

      • She quite an unpleasant sort. What shut her up is that she had argued with an empty room for about fifteen minutes.
