Not Inviting The New Technology

Technology is meant for making the things easy and smooth going. While the purpose of science is to discover the mysteries of nature using hypothesis and mathematical formulae and putting them to test their validity, the technology based on the science applies it to everyday life of mankind and invents many items and things towards this purpose. But, the technology which enters newly should be accepted by all. Otherwise, the very purpose of Technology is lost.

I am moving forward towards the construction of a new house. I am doing personal research as to how to build a new house with a minimum capital.

I am browsing the internet regularly for hours together and knowing the varieties of things. Starting from foundation stones to Interior designing of a house has become my regular study of various aspects and things.

when it comes to using foundation stones, generally the Mason uses ordinary stones and bind them together using cement concrete. But, there is a technology which is revolutionizing the concept of using stones.

Here, solid bricks come for this purpose. They can replace the cement beam which is laid after constructing 2 or 3 layers of ordinary stones. Here these solid bricks are placed one after the other instead of a beam. This will be quite strong and can withstand any amount of load.

Similarly, these solid concrete bricks can be used for ground floor construction of a house. They can be used for red bricks. The cost of the red bricks will be Rs.40 for 9 ” brick. But, a solid concrete brick of 12″ will cost only Rs.12. There is another size of the solid concrete brick that will be of 24″ and costs only Rs.15/-. The use of solid concrete bricks not only saves our money but also saves the time of construction. Moreover, the surroundings can be kept clean while constructing a house to enable us to have a clear vision of the correctness or otherwise of minute details. The only negative aspect of these solid concrete bricks is that they can not be used for 1st-floor walls as they are very heavy and add unnecessary weight to the foundation beam.

Here, one can opt hollow cement bricks which will be available in large blocks. They will have smooth finishing and they provide good cooling as they have a vacuum inside them which is a bad conductor of heat. So during summer season it gives a very nice cooling effect.

For setting the roof one can used Tiles which will be available at cheaper rates. They will be paired nicely over an Iron frame and attached to one another with concrete. This type of roof will be very elegant, beautiful, and quite decent. Most of the old British Buildings were constructed with Tile Roofing only.

When I inquired with the Mason about using these varieties in the construction of my house, the Mason who happened to be a semi-literate gives the following reason for their usage;

1. The solid concrete bricks are rough and they need cement plastering which can not be given a smooth finish.

2. They can not be used for the walls of a house

3. The walls constructed with solid concrete bricks will give cracks after some time.

4. The hollow lightweight blocks are costly and they have to ordered. Each hollow block will be around Rs.70-80.

5. The tiling for roofing purpose needs the fabrication of a frame which has to be ordered and laid on the walls and it is then only the Tiles can be spread on the frame. This is a very laborious work.

When I contacted my Engineer and sought his opinion he replied ‘These people are illiterates and semi-educated. They are capable of doing things using the techniques what they know and do not take up the help of new technology. They even do not encourage them for they do not know about it. There are many multinational companies which are constructing huge 30 to 50 stories buildings using hollow brick concept”

He took me to a site where a very big building was under construction using hollow cement blocks. It was quite fantastic.

I really surprised how the Mason is misleading the people and not advising them properly. I insisted on the usage of hollow bricks and solid concrete bricks for which he had no answer and simply disappeared from the scene.

    • though we just did our house, i ddidn note feel like im able to understand how these things happen, thatnks for the lots of detailed info, we have to learn what is going with houses and how

    • It's really great that you are personally looking into the indebt details of the constitution of your house. I have no idea of the hollow bricks because we have only seen those red bricks all our life. But new technologies have advanced a lot and made to fit for the current situations.
