My Gastric Bypass Journey- A personal weight loss story- Tribbles in the Shower- Hair loss

If you have any Star Trek experience you know what a Tribble is.  A large furry ball, that is comforting and sweet but multiplies faster than bunnies in April. Well when you start finding them in your shower stall at month 3-5 after gastric bypass they are NOT comforting and sweet, but they multiply unless you pay attention and follow directions from your nutrition team.

It is well documented in the weight loss surgery literature that you ARE going to lose some hair. Typically it is only the hair on your head that thins out. I do not know why but at least we get to keep our eyelashes and brows but we still need to shave (if you do that) our pits and legs. Go figure… Not sure about men, as I am not one.

You can slow the loss but you cannot stop it. Hair loss after surgery is expected and common. It is due to the shock of the surgery and drastic weight loss and calorie/nutrient intake.

There are many recommended ways to keep it to a minimum. The number one recommendation is Biotin Vitamins. 10,000 mg per day. Look closely at your bottle and find the best quality and least amount of capsules you have to swallow!

Nioxin shampoos and conditioners are available online and in stores. Don’t wash or brush only as needed to avoid the strain on your hair. Sleep in a turban so as not to have it all over your sheets.

Most importantly, keep your protein over 60 gms per day and stay hydrated.  And keep the faith- it will grow back and it is a small price to pay for being slimmer and healthier.

To manage thinner hair- a new style may be in order. Most women go to shorter cuts when the hair starts to thin. Wigs are a fun alternative, and you may find your insurance will reimburse for them. Hats and scarfs too. I found that, as mine thinned in the winter, that hats and a wig were helpful. I was getting a cold breeze in the areas there was no  hair!! burrr.

You do not lose it like cancer treatment causes loss, it thins but does not go completely. You can survive this. It is part of the journey. Make the most of it and have some fun.
