My Cockatiel Annie

It makes sense that my first blog would feature my buddy Annie.  Annie is the one friend I have seen every day since she first came into my life last October.

Last fall I lost another cockatiel friend, Corky, who had been in my life for eleven years following the death of her owner.  After I lost Corky I felt a hole in my heart that could only be filled by a cockatiel. So I placed an ad on Craigslist saying I could rehome a cockatiel. It was my good luck that a third grade teacher answered that ad. She had a three year old female cockatiel who she needed to rehome. The owner was going to China and giving up her teaching position temporarily. The cockatiel was living in her classroom and she knew no one who wanted to keep her. So I took a chance.

It took a month or so for Annie to bond with me. But she was already hand trained and friendly. She is a lutino cockatiel with soft colors. She wolf whistles but does not speak; and in fact, it’s usually male cockatiels who are more vocal. Annie does lay a couple of egg clutches a year, but I have no interest in mating her and raising babies.  Every day she spends a lot of time out of her cage, but I keep a close eye on where she goes. She loves to be on my shoulder and be a part of whatever I’m doing. She is very affectionate and loves to snuggle and nuzzle. Other than the wolf whistle and calls for attention sometimes, she is pretty quiet. If she starts heading into some kind of mischief, all I have to do is say “no, Annie” and she will waddle away from the direction she was going.

Annie has a playground with things to climb on, perches,  and a swing, but mainly she likes to hang out with me. If a cockatiel doesn’t have a bird friend, they will bond quite closely with their person and in fact I believe they think they are a person.

Do you have or have you had a bird for a buddy? Tell me about your pets.

    • Aw, you're making me wish I had a cockatiel. No bird story here, but I enjoyed reading yours. I can imagine your Annie story as a great children's book.

    • You're pet look so adorable and amazing! No doubt that you are such an animal lover! Me, too i have my doggie with me at home! And she's kinda adorable too but sometimes in a very different way. We used to take a bath every morning together and play with her around the house. I also sleep with her in my roon. We've been together for almost six years. I really love my pet!

      • Thanks so much. I bet your doggie is a lot of fun. I am keeping birds instead of dog or cat because I am living with my mother. She didn't want to get attached to any more dogs or cats having outlived so many already.
