MUSIC: AN ART AND A CULTURE

Music is art. Music is culture. People in this world make the music as part of their daily lives. Many people felt the joy of listening music. Some get inspired and say that life is worth living just because of music.

We can create or make our own music with or without instruments. Music can be heard in many ways. We can hear it on radios, CD’s, on Television, or through the computer. Music can excite us, cheer us up, or soothe us. Indeed, it gives pleasure to everyone who hears it.

What is Music all about?

Music can be romantic, sleepy, spine-tingling, sad, or happy. Music is anything that has a sound. It has a timbre, pitch, harmony, scale, time, and melody.

Music is also a unique means of communication. A composer or a singer communicates to their audience what they feel through music.

Music is divided into styles such as classical, baroque, romantic, postmodern, and modern. It also comes in many genres: religious music, military music, show music, film music, folk music, and popular music. We also have R&B, pop, rock, jazz and many other kinds.

Different places have their own distinct type of music. What music does Filipino people are used to listening may sounds strange or doesn’t sound good to other culture. Some places may even say that others music does not sound like one to them. For example, those places that use gongs to accompany their songs may not be applicable to the culture of others.

However, music is an art. Everyone can make music even by just stamping their feet on the ground while singing, clapping their hands, and other things they may use to create a sound as they chant their lyrics.

These modern days, there are many technologies or means of communication where we freely listen to different music of different cultures. We are slowly appreciating each other’s art through music. We are slowly used to adopt other countries type of singing techniques and instruments.

What is the importance of music to human?

Many activities and events that people are doing go along with the music. When we dance, we use music. When we do exercise, we use music. During festivities, some bands play for entertainment. In school, we sing our national anthem before entering the class. When we are sad, alone, or happy, we listen to music. Most of the time, music is being used when there are occasions like weddings and birthdays. In our favorite movies, the producers use music as a background to add more excitement to the movie.

In churches, music is very important because it is another way of giving praises and worship to God.

Music entertains us, inspires us, and also gives information to us. We even have our own favorite bands, singers or performer. Music is already a part of our life.
