MOUTHWASH:A BRIEF OVERVIEW ABOUT IMPORTANCE AND USE

MOUTHWSAHES
Mouthwash is used to basically freshen the breath. They are antiseptic liquids that are used to remove plaque and deposits on teeth. In addition to proper brushing and flossing they help to maintain oral hygiene. Their antibacterial properties help to fight against unwanted bacteria in mouth that can cause dental caries, gingivitis and plaque.

CORRECT USE
Using mouth wash is a good habit but they are effective only if used in a correct manner. There are a variety of mouthwashes that are available in the market. Each has different specifications of use. Reading proper instructions prior to usage is very important.
They should be used in exact quantities. Most of the mouth washes come with measuring cups or with a dispenser. They help to determine that mouthwash are used in proper amounts.
Some strong mouthwashes need dilution prior to use. They are really strong and should never be used in an undiluted form. It is important that they are used under strict prescription of doctor only.

DEFINELTY NOT AN ALTERNATIVE
It is very important to understand the fact that mouthwash is only an addition to regular mouth cleaning procedures. It cannot be used as an alternative to tooth brush and toothpastes. Only the use of mouth wash is not at all sufficient to maintain oral hygiene.

SIDE EFFECTS OF MOUTH WASHES

Mouth washes also have some side effects which are usually transient and fade off with time. The most common are taste disturbances, tooth staining and dry mouth. Some of the mouth washes that contain alcohol further increase bad breath and dryness of mouth. In severe cases it can also lead to apthous stomatitis or ulceration. In some cases allergies to one or more ingredient of mouth wash is also common. In this case their use must be discontinued with immediate effects.

MOUTHWASH FOR KIDS
There are mouthwashes which have antiseptic and antibacterial properties but they are alcohol containing. In pediatric dentistry alcohol containing mouthwashes should be avoided for infants and young children.
Young children could drink the mouthwash and this would be harmful. Therefore children below 6 years of age should not use mouthwash. If the child’s mouth smells, take the advice of the dentist as it could be because of a throat or tooth infection.
Mouthwash in case of children is to be used only if prescribed by the dentist.
Children can keep their teeth clean and germ free simply by following good oral hygiene on a regular basis. And do not forget the 6 month visit to the dentist beginning at your child’s first birthday.

    • Mouthwash is really needed in cases when one can not immediately brush his teeth. It is nice to smell a person who had used it.

      But are there mouthwash brands that are not so good to sue because they tend to cause dry throats? Are there natural, good alternatives to commercial mouthwashes?
