Mood Disorders – What You Need To Know

Mood disorders are the most common and most costly mental illnesses in the world today, with depression being the most widespread mental health problem. Each year, more than 100 million people in the world suffer from depression. Overall, 20% of people will suffer an episode of depression in their lifetime. It’s not for sure if mood disorders are becoming more prevalent or if they are simply being identified more due to new understandings of mental illness. There has certainly been an increase in the diagnosis of mood disorders over the years though. Mood disorders, including depression, lead to lost jobs, destroyed families, and in the most severe cases – lost lives.

Bipolar disorder occurs in 1.2% of the population, while the rate of depression is much higher. Many mood disorders are episodic, which means they are recurrent. In more than half of all cases of major depression, the illness will reoccur within 2 years. This means that ongoing care is needed throughout a person’s lifetime or at least for an extended period of time. People with depression average 7 episodes in a lifetime – those with bipolar disorder average about 11 episodes in a lifetime. These are only averages however, the number varies from person to person.

Suicide is a very real risk for those with mood disorders. Up to 15% of those who suffer from mood disorders commit suicide. This number is thirty times higher than the general population. With treatment though, this risk can be reduced greatly. Antidepressants and mood stabilizers go a long way towards helping those who suffer from these illnesses. New treatments are also constantly being developed. Shockingly though, only 20% of people suffering from mood disorders get treatment due to lack of knowledge about treatment and stigma. Many advocacy groups work tirelessly to get the word out about treatment options and reduce stigma about having a mental illness diagnosis.

    • I am aware that depression can lead to serious mental disorder if it is not treated. That's the reason why we need to inculcate in our minds about this issue. In my country, there are so many suicidal cases and mental disorder hasn't been detected.

For some reason, if had seen some people who showed unexplainable mood swing. We need to closely observe these people. It is our discretion to ask for an assistance. If we do this, it will prevent the incidence of high rate of mental disorder. We also can save the lives of others.

    • Mood disorder is not any disease but it is a spirit disorder. According to law of nature man falls ill when human soul becomes ill and its demonstration on the mood screen. It is said that face is the index of human thoughts, feelings and emotions.

I think mood disorder means that a psychological disorder characterized by the elevation or lowering of a person's mood, such as depression or bipolar disorder. "true clinical depression is a mood disorder, which can interfere with everyday life for an extended time"

Mood disorders are a category of illnesses that describe a serious change in mood. Illness under mood disorders include: major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder (mania - euphoric, hyperactive, over inflated ego, unrealistic optimism), persistent depressive disorder (long lasting low grade depression), cyclothymia (a mild form of bipolar disorder), and SAD (seasonal affective disorder).

People are more easily demoralized by depression and slower to recover if they are withdrawn and unreasonably self-critical or irritable, impulsive, and hypersensitive to loss.

Most people with major depression also show some signs of anxiety, and 15-30% have panic attacks. As a biological mechanism for coping with danger, anxiety creates a need for help or protection that may give way to despair if it is disappointed. Chronically anxious people may also medicate themselves with alcohol or drugs that can cause depression.
