Monphobia, the morbid fear of being alone

In a previous article  I wrote about people who hate their own company. People who can not bear to be alone.

This led to a very peculiar discussion with someone in real life.   She spent some time telling me the whole story, which I will precis  for you here.

There was a girl named Trudy, but her sister called her ‘Taggy’ . This was for Tag Along, for according to the sister no matter where she was going her sister wanted to follow her.  The older sister found it very annoying and often ran and hid to get away from Taggy.

When Trudy went to school she quickly made best friends.   She would be with her friend all the time.  This would last  until the friend felt she couldn’t breathe.    Then Trudy would find another best friend and do the same thing.

When she was in her late teens she met a man.  At first things seems fine, but then he began to treat rather badly.   At some point he broke up with her, but she couldn’t let go.   She kept after him, and after a few failed relationships he came back to her  and eventually, somehow he married her.

His treatment of her soon progressed to not good, but she wouldn’t leave.   No matter what he did.

Her sister pressured her, trying to get to the truth.  After all, why did she marry this guy?  Why, after he broke up with her did she persist in trailing him, trying to remain part of his life.  Did she love him that much?

No, she admitted, she didn’t.

They why stay?

And Trudy said; “I would rather live a lie than live alone.”

Trudy is one of the best examples of a ‘monophobic’ person.  She has a morbid fear of being alone.  It doesn’t matter that she doesn’t love her husband, that he treats her badly. She is not alone.

Many people who hate their own company, who can not be alone, have a psychological problem.  A problem which is treatable.

To rather live a lie than live alone is nothing to be proud of.

The most frequently used form of therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and systematic desensitization or exposure therapy. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 75% of people with specific phobias overcome their fears through cognitive-behavioral therapy.

In desensitization or exposure therapy, you are exposed in a safe and controlled way to the object or situation you fear. The most commonly used exposure therapy involves gradual encounters with the fear-producing object, first in the imagination and then in reality. Through repeated experiences facing your fear, you begin to realize that the situation, while possibly unpleasant, is not harmful. With each exposure, you feel an increasing sense of control over your phobia. This sense of control over the situation and yourself is the most important benefit of exposure therapy. As you become desensitized to your fear, you no longer react with uncontrollable panic when confronted by it.

Relaxation and stress relief techniques are frequently an accompaniment to other therapeutic approaches. Relaxation techniques may include things like specific ways of breathing, muscle relaxation training, guided mental imagery, or soothing self-talk.

Medication can also be used in the treatment of monophobia. Drugs do not "cure" a fear of being alone or any other phobia, but they can temporarily suppress the symptoms through chemical interaction.
