Money, Position & Happiness – What We Don’t Know About! (Part-III)

Lack of money gives us DISCOMFORT BUT NOT SADNESS. Money, position and achievement could give me more regard, courtesy and protocol but not RESPECT. Even while giving a perfect regard, courtesy and protocol, a person may NOT be giving me respect. Think of person alighting an expensive car at a 5 star hotel. The staff over there would salute and greet him with smile. Some people would confuse this to respect but NO… get your vocabulary right! Think of a poor man who walks in there wearing rags. Do you think he would be greeted or saluted? He would instead be shoed out. So what made the difference? Yes the car and the dress of the rich man NOT the man himself. This difference is subtle and needs to be understood fully. It is very much possible that the person saluting the rich man knows something terrible about the rich man. Though out of compulsion of job he would be saluting him with a smile but in the back of the mind he would heap the person with scorns…isn’t it? So where did the RESPECT go? The rich man on the other hand might be ‘happy’ with the ‘respect’ he got with that greetings and salute! How often we fall prey to such wrong notions of respect? The more correct word in this case would be regard: not respect. Mind you, regard is not comparable at all to respect. Respect belongs to a very high order. Regard in the eyes of everyone move up and down with your position. This is quite logical as regard is linked to your position and not yourself. But Respect continues to be with you regardless of your position. It is linked to your personality.
