Milford Sound – a Fjord in New Zealand

Cradled among sheer rocks the tasman sea has created a fjord in South New Zealand which is called Milford Sound. It has a run of around 15 kms with  rocks the highest being around 1500 feet. These rocks have natural formations – one resembling the elephant’s head and yet another that resembles the lion’s head.

As part of our New Zealand package tour that included both South and North New Zealand we spent a full day at the Milford Sound Fjord – a boat took us there. We  spent the whole day in the boat that took us round the Fjord. We dined and relaxed there and had a great time bringing back memories that I often keep alive by merely sitting in my favourite corner in my house and reminiscing.

Apart from our own group there were others in the boat that we were in. We mixed and mingled and the atmosphere was cordial.

It was quite chilly that day having to put on some warm clothing to protect us from the cold breeze. We were served snacks at regular intervals and there was  food aplenty.

What was fascinating was the waterfall that we witnessed. A waterfall in a sea – after all a Fjord is a part of the sea – was unimaginable and breathtaking. It did not create much of a sound but the fall was from the highest peak – a narrow streak of water.

The setting sun was yet another panoramic view that was clear as crystal – nothing blocked it. The greenery covering the rocks was yet another phenomenon that was too much to digest – all this in the middle of the sea.

Blessed are those who have been bitten by the travel bug and I belong there. We always opt for package tours as we know the tour conductors will include those sights that a tourist would want to visit and the Milford Sound was one of them.

It is unbelievable that South New Zealand which appears laid back would have something as great as this to offer its tourists.Milford Sound is among the greatest tourist attractions in the world.

    • Your post is very informative and worth reading. But I am very sorry to tell you that the fonts are too small for me to read.

      • @nakitakona13 There is no provision here to work on our fonts. I now go to 'word' and do it there. If you have seen my later posts you will see the difference.

    • Unable to travel. So thank you for taking me along with you to Milford Sound, South New Zealand.

      • You must be having valid reasons not to travel. Happy that you got to imagine a trip to Milford Sound after reading my post.

    • Yes, Milford is a beautiful city and all the reasons that inspire travellers to make the long journey are concentrated in this out-of-the-way, pristine corner of Fiordland, a region in the island’s south-west corner. Scenic roads, well-marked trails and peaceful cruises, combined with the pellucid waters and the temperate rainforests that cling desperately to steep mountains.

Few people attempt the tricky climb, but every visitor takes countless photographs, trying to get the perfect image of the mountain – and its reflection. But even professional photographers cannot adequately capture the majesty of the landscape or convey the cool clarity of the air – you have to go there to experience it, even if that means two days of flying and a fairly major investment.

The southern summer is our winter. Most people arrive in the peak months of January and February. December and March-April are good options for decent weather and fewer people. Walkers should note that while the Milford Track – the popular walking route – is unregulated from May to mid-October, there are no lodge services, and there’s a risk of avalanche as well as deep snow on the path.

    • Wow! I can't find words to say! The place was absolutely worth travelling for how i wish i could be there to visit the place and to see its greatness even once in my lifetime i would like go there ;)
