acelawrites wrote a new post, Keeping Children Busy on School Breaks 7 years, 8 months ago

Some schools have not yet changed their academic calendars; they are still following the old schedule of classes which start in June and end in March or early part of April.

Many colleges and universities in our […]

    • True, if such activities are encouraged in the children they will teach them a sense of discipline and time management. Once they know how to value their time they will see to it that they do not waste time as it is limited. There are so many activities to choose from if one would want to. For doing all this the parents should not have spoilt the children and inculcated bad habits like addiction to online games, mobiles lazing around etc.

This has to be taught since a young age as if one catches them young then this habit will come to them like how a fish would swim in water once it is born. These will also turn out to be life skills as should some child unable to read or study and be able to complete higher studies plan b is always ready as these children will be doing what they like.

      • You are correct, children must be taught time management with the guidance of their parents. They can use the skills they would learn later in their lives.

    • It is so true that schools changed the calendar of activities like in our university the final exam is set April first week.Last Christmas I initiated pigments painting with the kids at home That was a was a very exciting activity making the children at home my nephews busy. You are right, that way kids can acquire earlier skills and talents.

      • So your school has not changed the academic calendar? Some colleges have it from August to May the following year. It is nice to know you taught your nephews about pigment painting during their Christmas break. It could be fun.

    • Activities are so good for children, it keeps them busy and occupied. On summer vacations, my children are active 247. My daughter gets enrolled in gymnastics and my son in football. Its not just about fun loving activities, like the parks and all, but get skilled in what you like doing. You may even find these puzzle books or word search good for these kids, it helps with their vocab. I do not give room to just tvs, games etc alone, but get busy.

      • That’s very good; you are one of those very responsible parents who aim to bring out the best in their children. Engaging them in sports like what you are doing will help them develop a career when they mature.

      • I am amazed at your reply. It’s good for a blog post. Thanks anyway, you had elaborated enough on what to do to help develop children; to give them additional skills and to hone their potentials.

    • Very good post. At the same time we can think about their leadership developeent skills.

While leadership skills can come naturally, children learn lessons along the way that significantly impacts them later in life. The right words at the right time can make all the difference.

Here are few great tips to help you instill the right skills in the future leaders in your life.

      1. Set a good example.
As a leader, you realize the importance of setting a good example for your team. This is even truer of your role as a parent. By allowing your children to see how well you balance your business and personal roles, you’ll teach them accountability through effective leadership.

      2. Encourage team activities.
Early on, identify your children’s interests and encourage their participation in group activities. Whether it’s joining a scouting troop, participating in sports or joining the school band, children learn valuable lessons about teamwork through these activities.

Related: To Raise a Well-Adjusted Adult, Teach Your Kid Early About the Value of Reputation

      3. Emphasize perseverance.
The best leaders learn to handle failure as gracefully as they handle success. It’s important to expose future leaders to disappointment rather than protecting them from it. Children need to learn to handle the loss and move forward when the other team wins or someone else is elected class president.

      4. Build negotiation skills.
Every good leader knows the art of compromise. Instead of giving your children a firm “yes” or “no” to a request, make an offer and allow them to counter that offer by offering solid points. Teach them negotiation skills like never giving up something without asking for something else in return.

      5. Hone decision-making abilities.
Children should learn how to make good decisions as early in life as possible. Because children become overwhelmed by too many choices, narrow down the options to two or three, whether a child is deciding on afternoon activities or a movie to watch. My wife Kristy says “Teach your children to weigh the pros and cons of each option in order to make the most informed decision possible. This will help them to make correct decisions in everyday life.”

      6. Practice confident communication.
When you go to a restaurant, do you place orders for your children? You can actually turn a simple dinner into a confidence-building exercise by having your children speak directly to servers. Allowing them to order and speak directly to servers will help them gain confidence in themselves and be able to communicate what they need.

      7. Encourage work.
Often children are eager to begin working in some capacity. If your child wants to set up a lemonade stand, support them and encourage it. Once your children are old enough, they can take on work opportunities like babysitting and mowing neighborhood yards, provided you live in a safe neighborhood. These early jobs can be essential to building leadership skills in children.

      8. Enroll in summer camp.
Summer camp is filled with opportunities to participate in team-building activities. Once youth reach a certain age, they may even be asked to help counselors. While many camps require counselors to be 18, a regular camp attendee may be able to land a spot assisting counselors, where they’ll be tasked with leading groups of younger children.

      9. Have family game night.
Instead of spending an evening staring at your respective screens, consider an evening of board games instead. A family game night not only provides a unique way to spend time together, it helps children learn to be a good sport, play by the rules, and think strategically.

      10. Teach project planning skills.
As a family, you likely have many planned events, from family vacations to visiting relatives. As you prepare, don’t leave children out of the planning process. Treat each event as though it were a business project, holding brainstorming sessions and delegating smaller tasks to your young family members.

      11. Use vision boards.
One fun way to teach children goal-setting is through the use of vision boards. They’ll have fun cutting out pictures and arranging them on a board, and in the process they will learn how to visualize what they want to achieve.

      12. Avoid jumping in.
When your child works on a project or activity, it can be tempting to jump in and help, especially if you see your child struggling. Instead, consider stepping back and letting your children work through it themselves. After the fact, you can review the obstacles and challenges that emerged during the task and ask for ideas on how things could have been done differently.

      13. Find a mentor.
As great an example as you are to your children, a mentor can be invaluable. A trusted friend or family member can be a great mentor, especially if that person is accomplished in an area in which your child expresses interest. There are also organizations that can supply screened members as mentors.

      14. Encourage reading.
Studies have shown the benefits of reading for fun in childhood, with children who read having greater intellectual progress in a variety of subjects. Young readers tend to learn more about the world, even when the reading is of a frivolous nature.

      15. Reward optimistic thinking.
The fact that optimism is connected to success should not be lost on your family. Reward optimism, especially when that optimism is connected to attempting to reach a goal.

Financial expert Miranda Marquit teaches that “to teach your children money management you need to allow them to make mistakes. Have them make a list of what they want, then help them to prioritize what on the list is more important and have them save for it.” This will teach them valuable lessons that will help them throughout their whole life. It will also help them know what they can and can’t afford.

In small ways, today’s leaders can prepare younger generations for their future as business leaders. Each of these suggestions will not only create better leaders, but can help children perform better in school and develop better personal relationships throughout life.

    • Well, it is really good to teach them a lesson they will never forget.

    • It is better to be at a safe distance from toxic characters as they try to spread their negativity to others. If we are forced to deal with someone like this in the place of work we should just make it a professional relationship. We should not be affected by their words or mannerisms even if it irritates. We should not allow that thing to get into our mind. We cannot expect a donkey to understand and start behaving like a horse.

If it becomes too much or the person tends to be overbearing. I will sternly tell him what I will do if this continues even if he is a superior. In my experience what I have observed is that the moment I raise my voice everyone goes silent and does not trouble me or take me for granted. That is my ultimate weapon for these people.

    Credit Pinterest.com for the share

We have come across many scenes where we find in different parts of the world there is acute shortage of water despite there being heavy rainfall during the rainy season. […]

    • As time goes on, more and more people are using a lot of water and the resources becoming scarce. There should be remedies to the shortage or impending shortage of potable water. One is planting of trees, but in some areas, there are no more vacant lots to plant on, mostly were cemented. So the government should enforce tree planting in available areas and prevent illegal cutting of trees.

Water management should be efficient, and people should abide by the laws on water usage. It is best if they will recycle water.

      • Agree with your suggestions to tide over this problem faced in most cities in different parts of the world. What I find is the people are careless with their attitude. They all would like to complain about the governments and how they are not being provided water by the concerned authorities. But could not care less about their responsibilities as a citizen.

Government bodies too are lethargic in whatever they do and these people also come from the same society. The only thing is once they get elected the responsibility for which they have come has to be fulfilled which very few are able to do so. Majority of these members are the ones who do not care about the issue that is the sad part. Thank for the inputs.

    • Here in the city where we live, people buys the water they drink. That’s because they want to make sure that the water they drink are safe and clean.

They have water on their faucets but they aren’t sure if they are potable. Maybe we can but we have to boil them first before we drink them and that’s tedious.

And that is the situation in the city where I work and also in the next town where we live.

But not in the hometown where my parents live. There, you can get water straight from the faucet and drink without getting sick. It is safe to drink and clean. It is also so forceful. They can open two faucets at the same time at the sink yet they both have lots of forceful water.

That’s because the source of their water is from a spring that is being gathered in a cemented big container with a lid. This is always regularly cleaned and checked as to its cleanliness.

As to trees, our hometown have lots of them compared to the cities which like you said because of urbanization the trees were all nowhere to be found already. Although, it’s a good thing now, that the mayor have already implemented the cleaning of the ditches so flood now is just in one place or two but not in the city proper anymore.

      • Even at our place here we are having to purchase water since the last year. As the water board releases drinking water every five to seven days. So we had to store it and use it carefully, but since some new pipeline works are taking place they have stopped supply and it comes once every 7 days. Hence we are forced to purchase water from outside.

Regarding the need for water for other purposes like washing, cleaning etc. We have a well since the past 35 years and we draw water from the same. Ours is the only house in the colony which has a well all others have borewell which is a technology which is being misused and abused by many. They dig borewells beyond the prescribed limit. While our house has a garden and water drains directly to the ground when it rains. With others it is not so as they have cemented the surface. Their logic is it is clean and looks neat and they do not have to maintain it as in the case of the garden which we have. Thanks for the information you shared.

    • Thanks for the feedback. Last year in the summer months it was a very bad situation in our country in many of the states. They had to start water trains to supply water to the places where there was sever water shortage. These people also had to subsist on one pot of water for one to two weeks in many places. It was so bad that at some of the places people started fighting for water. It was a desperate situation.

Governments do not seem to want to act against the people who are the trouble makers as they have to go to them every five years to seek votes and win elections. That is the reason they allow these problem to happen and sit and watch as the situation unfolds. In the end they panic when people get angry and do some patch up work to see that that particular year is done with. Then everything is forgotton conveniently till problem crops up the next year again.

    • water water is all what people need to start a life, its like magic and some people do not appreciate it, really uo feel bad when you see that, its like treature, wel all need to take care good about not to finish.
it is enough to say that more htan half weight the human is water, be careful with using it all of you

    • here in my country there is a problem with water. In all honesty i believe now they have somewhat gotten control of its usage. in the past communities would have been without water for months sometimes years. In my house in the past we went through the period where there would have been periodic lock offs of water. we had to juggle our work, school and collecting and storing water for our usage. it was really a stressful time for us as there were moments when we had to rush home so we could collect water before it was shut off. thank God we managed and pulled through without any major health issues.

recently in late november last year the second city receive 4 months of rainfall in one day according to the experts. the pictures and videos of the catastrophe was disheartening. today they are still cleaning up that area.

      • Thanks for participating in this debate. Happy to note that you could tide over the water crisis. In 2018 I have been observing the weather pattern it has become highly unpredictable and huge amount of financial loss has occurred all over the world some places have been flooded while others have heavy snow and some others have no water. Human lifestyle is responsible for this situation. Best wishes and regards.

    • I think insurance companies have a ceiling as to how much should be paid to a bank in case it is robbed. Usually, they make the ceiling of how they can pay only according to the amount that was agreed in the policy according to how much premium also they have paid for it.

That kind of robbery also happened here in our city. I was also an employee in a bank then. One of the banks were robbed before lunch time. All the employees were all made to drop on the floor. . All the customers were made to lie on the floor, head down. When a pregnant woman can’t lay head facing down well , she was kicked in the butt

The manager, cashier and the employees were all locked inside the vault.

When the robbers were gone, they shouted at that small hole in the vault where it is really made for that.

Officers from the other bank were made to open the vault by telling them the combinations. They changed the combinations after that.

    • In this case, the manager had been embezzeling money from the bank. This is why the numbers didn’t match.

Food is a basic necessity which is required for all living beings to be consumed and gaining energy so that the wheel of life can progress further. We find that […]

    • You are right, there is so much food wasted. If carefully managed, many people will not go hungry and prices of food commodities will go down. This requires efficient post-harvest facilities along with the right technology for the farmers. Biological control of pests like rats should be undertaken. Aside from cats or snakes that feed on rats, farmers should find its breeding places and eradicate them manually. For left-over foods in restaurants, there should be really a local law asking the management to donate to charity or to soup kitchens the left-over but still in good condition food.

It is sharing and proper management that can help solve food wastage.

      • It is true in our country itself there is not much of awareness even among the educated class who are well off. They feel that since they have paid for the food they can consume how much they want and waste the remaining which is very bad according to meaning. Being a Hindu food according us is nothing but Goddess Annapoornadevi who provides for every living being in life.

People should appreciate this and see that they do not waste food and abuse this noble Goddess. I really pity these people who call themselves educated. While there many good samaritans who give one fist rice for the purpose of charity from the food they cook for the house. That way the unfortunate can also have food and try for something better for their lives. It is a very complicated problem to eradicate rates. If food is there rats and other rodents are attracted and come immediately. The seem to be very intelligent too.

    • I agree.

    • Thanks for your comment appreciate your participation.

    • Life indeed is so uncertain; we do not know what will happen tomorrow or in the future. Like what you discussed here, having an insurance is a best step to cushion the impact of such unfortunate incidents. It is better to be prepared when we need it like having a health insurance plan.

      • Agree with you. Unfortunately governments and insurance companies do not provide insurance which even the poorest of the poor are able to afford as it is a mandatory necessity for all for all citizens of any country in the world. The inflation and the prices being very high. If any problem occurs it will help those affected.

Many people also have the notion that having a insurance is equivalent to wasting the morning earned with great difficulty. Hence they avoid taking the same. The premiums too scare away many people from taking insurance. Insurance companies seem to be targeting only those who are well off. And do not consider the poor as worth targeting. If they change this attitude and look at that as a major marked and come up with policies which are according to their needs it will help the poor a lot and the insurance companies too will grow. Thanks for the feedback.
