Students supposed to be studying: 5 days a week, from 8:00 in the morning to 12 noon and 1PM to 5 in the afternoon.
This was supposed to be.
But as the classes going on, this is not being followed very well. So many distractions that students are not concentrated in their studying; instead they are being diverted to many activities, vacations, programs among others.
Can the Department of Education do something to minimize these distractions? Can they have one program for study and other program for such activity?
As per observation, these are the distractions in schooling.
Sports Activities. This is one major distractions to the students because schools are oblige to make such activity in their school; intramurals, schools’ meet, unit meet, district, provincial and then the regional athletics meet. Sometimes, during the first day, teachers are required to attend the activity. The practices also disturb the students.
Academic Programs. There are English Festivals, Linggo ng Wika or National Language Week, Math Festivals and many other programs that require the students to participate and need to cancel the classes for such activity.
Seminars and Workshops. When the teachers are required to attend the seminars and workshops, the whole classes and even the school is affected. Sometimes, these seminars and workshops take up to 3 days. And when it’s held out of town, the days take longer.
Legal Holidays and Vacations. In one year, there are so many legal holidays, declared holidays and local holidays. These holidays means no classes also.
Natural Disasters. When typhoon strikes, sometimes even a week is not enough of no classes because of floods, damaged classroom, books, and class materials. The more typhoons come, the more no classes in such area.
There are many more distractions like during the Foundation Day anniversary, city of municipal fiesta, death of teachers and others.
In the end, it’s the students are being affected. Unless the DepEd will plan for the regulation and management of this distraction, the students will always be at the losing side. But as of now, I can see no changes in these activities.
Of course, some students are enjoying the vacation. But for those who are determined to have good grades for their brighter future, they are chasing the days they should be in school.

The most distractor for the students is playing computer games. It is so powerful that they can't control oneself and even being pressured by their friends. Some of these students commit a big sin, that is, to cut classes and go to computer shops.
The most affected are the parents who tried to help the students chase their dreams. There are times that computer shops are so lax in accommodating the students during class hours. If the government can only have strict rules for this kind of business establishments.
