We usually use food coloring in our food, ranging from
cookies, cakes, muffins, jellies , candies, gelatin desserts
and carbonated drinks.
Most bakers would resort to using artificial coloring
drops sold in supermarket for a quick food coloring to
save time and money.
A few drops of coloring could produce a batch of
cookies.
Food coloring is essential in food industries as they need
to attract buyers to purchase their manufactured
products.
Big companies do not venture into natural food
coloring because it is time consuming and produces in
small quantity.
However, food coloring is not a healthy option for kids
and people who are allergic to it.
Toddlers should refrain from consuming food coloring
products as their anti bodies are not strong enough to
defend any side effects.
You should not use artificial food coloring in your home
made food that is serve for babies and toddlers.
There are many side effects which may result to food
allergies, rashes and self inflicted behavior that may
become an obstacle to their growth. ( eg: ADHD )
This does not indicate that adults should consume
artificial food coloring because it is alright.
Artificial food coloring substance that are not digested
and absorb into our body will flow into out kidney
which turned into stones, stained the bladder and
digestive tracts.
l Bladder tumors
l Brain cancer
l Inhibit Nerve development

Making your own natural food coloring for your
homemade pastries, cakes, beverages and jellies is the
perfect solution to protect your family from harm.
Bright and colorful colors from vegetables and fruits
help to stimulate everyone’s appetite spontaneously to
consume your homemade food.
Homemade food coloring from fresh vegetables and
fruits are packed with variety of vitamins, minerals,
fibres and nutrients that are easily absorbed into the
digestive system.
We also use food coloring at home, a persuasive
method to encourage family members to eat
homemade food.
• fresh vegetables coloring
• fresh fruits coloring
I like to make my own natural food coloring instead of
purchasing store bought artificial coloring.
Although natural food coloring may not produce deep
in color as you compare to artificial coloring, it does
give the fragrant fruity and veggie odor , healthy and
packed with natural nutrients.
I wanted my jellies to have the pandan flavor; so I
plucked 8 pieces of screwpine leaves (locally we
called it “Pandan”) ,wash the, cut into quarters and
blend them in a fruit juice blender with a little water.
Presto! I had made 3 tablespoon of fresh natural
pandan green coloring.
Aromatic and tasty.
Do try to experiment fresh fruits or vegetables at home
by boiling in hot water or blend them in a fruit juice
blender with additional little water.
If you don’t have a fruit juice blender, simply boil a
soup pot 1/3 of water with the vegetables to produce
dark green color.
Same goes with the fruits, boil them with a little water
until they turn soft.
Press out the juice with a strainer or squeeze the fruit
juice out with your bare hands ( orange / lemon juice ).
Red cabbages, beet roots, raspberries, tomatoes
, strawberries, watermelon
Spinach, water spinach, watercress, kale,
screwpine leaves.
Carrots, pumpkin, apricots, squash, egg yolks
Blueberries, black berries, egg plant (brinjal)
Remember, everytime when you needed food
coloring for your homemade cooked / baked
food, please use natural food coloring at home.
You can prepare the food coloring one day
before hand.
Think for your loved ones, for health and enjoy
the food.

All natural food colorings and dyes are made from plants and other natural products. They are safe, gentle on the environment and more available than ever. Do they work as well as artificial dyes? And…are artificial food colorings really that bad?
The Problem with Artificial Food Dyes
More and more researchers believe that there is a link between chemical additives in food and certain health problems, especially in children. Some of the health problems identified with the use of these artificial food colorings are —
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Behavioral problems
Depression
Food allergies
Headaches and migraines
Moodiness
All natural food colorings are made with natural products that have been used for decades, and in some cases centuries, without problems. Traditionally grated carrots were added to the cream that butter was to be made from to give it a more golden hue. Beets were added to create a crimson color in cakes and frostings – and the list goes on.
The problem with natural and organic food dyes is that they are not always consistent in how they color something. Also, it is important to remember that while all natural dyes are made from natural ingredients they are not always organic.
Examples of natural food dyes are –
Brown is often made from caramelized sugar
Blue made from red cabbage or blueberry skins
Green made from vegetable extracts like spinach, parsley, etc.
Orange is typically made from the pulp around the annatto seed but can also be made with carrots
Red may be made of hibiscus, beets or the Cochineal beetle (sounds gross but it has been used for over a century)
Pink may be made from beets
Purple can be made from blackberry, purple carrots or red cabbage
Yellow can be made from turmeric or carrot.
Food coloring gives some attraction. The buyer will be tempted to buy the product just by its appearance The coloring gives fresh look and assumed taste to the product. But, the artificial coloring is very harmful and needs to be avoided. These colors are generally used in cool drinks and other drinks to make them attractive.
If you purchase an ice cream ball from a vendor he will first chop off the raw ice and add some fruit pieces like pineapples, custard apple, watermelon, etc., and finally, takes out a bottle which will have some fine nozzle. The bottle will be very colorful. He just sprinkles the drink over the top of the ice. It becomes very attractively and colorful.
Nowadays, in India, we are having 'Soda Spot' shops where they will sell cool drinks having Beer, strawberry, mango, pineapple, orange flavors. They do not have any fruits juice in them. Just some essence and some color. Is it not dangerous to have them whenever we find them on the road? I am afraid of using them. But, when I move out with family I too enjoy them and become a small kid, Of course, this is life and we have to mix with kids like a kid only. This is another enjoyment.
