Although both series deal with crime and there are lots of murders, shootings, bombings, etc. The shows are created with a touch of ‘lightness’ so that they aren’t to be taken all that seriously.
A spy is ‘fired’ (that’s the Burn Notice) and dumped in the city where he lived; Miami. He has no job, no money, nothing. His mother lives there, his ex-girlfriend is there, and an old F.B.I. pal is also there.
The show always has narration by ‘Michael Weston’, the ‘Burned Spy’. It begins with the prologue, as I’ve mentioned above, and during the show, while he creates some gadget or identity he explains what he’s doing.
It is an episodic show so that missing an episode doesn’t really effect your understanding, and there is very little, sometimes, no carry over from the previous viewing to this one.
It is a fine series to watch when one wants to break up a more serious program, most often a ‘Story Arc’ one.
Where one must recall what happened last episode in a Story Arc, one doesn’t have to invest much effort in an episodic.
This is the story of a special police unit created in Hawaii and virtually given carte blanche by the Governor.
It is made up of Steve McGarrett, who was a Navy Seal, Danny who was a New Jersey Police Officer, and two cousins, Chin and Kono.
Other characters come in and out, some stick.
Steve is pretty off centre, liable to do anything. Danny is more straight laced. They tend to argue a great deal, which breaks the tension.
As an Episodic programme it is, like Burn Notice, a good break in the watching of a more serious programme.
Burn Notice has ended so one has no problem watching as few or as many episodes, because the last episode is the last episode. Hawaii 5 0 is still going on so that one has to be a bit careful not to reach the ‘last’ programme and have to wait for Next week or next season to see the next episode.
