All About Rummy

Yes. Let’s play Rummy. Why not?  Playing online has caught up quite fast. Anyone can join. The software is all in place to invite anyone. Even to play for money there are features in the software that take care of that.

Rummy – a card game is popular the world over. It can be played both online and offline. Rummy can be played by two or more and the number of decks that are used to play this game, depends on the number of participants.

Rummy has many versions but they are all played on the same principle. Players are seated round a table. Each of the players draws a card from the deck and the one with the least card value shuffles and deals to start the game. The player on the right of the one who deals and shuffles, cuts the pack. The top part of the pack is placed on the table and the other part is first dealt. The player on the right picks up a card from that part of the pack that lies on the table to declare a wild card. This card plays the same role as that of the joker. The number of cards that are dealt depends on the version of the game. The most common rules are that the player needs to make sets of three or four of the same rank and three or more cards in sequence of the same suit. The cards that have remained after they have been dealt are kept aside with face down which is called the ‘stock pile’.The game starts in the clockwise direction. The first player picks a card from the ‘stock pile’ and discards either the same card if it is of no use or keeps it and discards one from the lot that the player has on hand. The ‘discard pile’ is face open. The next player can either pick the discarded card, which is right on top or pick from the ‘stock pile’. The player who completes the game as per rules is the winner of that game. There is a time limit set for each player to play the game, failing which there are penalties which depend on the version of the game. If no cards remain in the stock pile then the discarded cards are shuffled and used as ‘stock pile’

Once the winner declares, the cards are checked and if it is wrongly declared, the game is considered null and void. There are penalties depending on the version of the game.

A score chart is maintained and the score is counted on the cards that are not used for making the required combinations and this score is credited to the winning player, but is used to deduct the score of the losing players. In certain versions there is a rule where one needs to have atleast a straight run without which the entire ‘hand’ is counted. Each card has its own value and this again differs from version to version.

Rummy is played for stakes and this is decided by the players before the onset of the game. The time limit is set by the players and after the expiry of the specified time the players get paid as per their winnings. Rummy is also played for fun.

    • I love to play as we called it 500 Rummy or Rummy. We also played Gin rummy. I remember one twist we used to play with is that whoever would get stuck with the Queen of Spades in their hand had to add 50 points to their total score. I haven't played this game in years.

      • I too have not played in years but I enjoyed playing it with friends and family sometimes with a stake too - a small one though (lol)

    • I have absolutely no idea about this card game though I have played some other card games. Thanks for sharing!

      • @shaloo walia This is a game that is played for stakes. One can just play for fun as well but there is fun when the points get a value. We used to play in the family. We also played among office colleagues. This game is fun. Now one can play it online too. You can invite strangers as well.

    • I do not have knowledge about playing card,Others are very good in doing this.I thunk this requires constant practice.

      • @cely In a way you are write. You do need practice but it is not difficult. I have played several card games and now I play Solitaire games online.

        • So nice of you, you have lots of time. I should have tried it during summer vacation.I will practice playing cards during our sem break.Thanks.

    • Hmm, this reminds me of a game I played while in my home country but I only know of it the way we call it in our native tongue. Card games are really fun and can be addicting. I remembered playing with it almost every-single-day at that time.

      • These days I too do not play cards with real people nor do I gamble. I have enough and more on my hands.

    • I used to play it until a few years back but then came Pupploo or something similar sounding with multiple jokers and that ruined Rummy.

      • I have not heard of Pupploo. Nor do I play with real people. I have a few online card games which I play when pages take time to load.

        • Not with real people Oh.. oh..oh I should have known that because Paploo is for real people with heavy amount changing hands :)
