There are many types of palms and adding them in a garden gives it a classy look. I have the Royal Palm, Bottle Palm and Ficus Palm. Palms need very little maintenance and most of these palms give out succulents – exceptions being the coconut and areca palms.
There are a few palms that give out flowers occasionally. No doubt the coconut and areca palms have to give out flowers which are called inflorescence
Palms cannot be trimmed as they do not give out branches. The gardener should therefore be careful with his chopper. When the leaves dry up they need to be cut off taking care not to touch the crown of the palms.
Ficus Palm is a hardy plant which attains height at a very slow pace. It gives out succulents which I discard as I have quite a few of these palms already in my garden. There is no demand as these days due to various reasons very few are into gardening.
It is a pleasure to watch how the leaves emerge. They come in clusters all closed up and slowly open up. The tender leaves are light green in colour and as they grow the colour changes and there is a new crown adding yet another layer of leaves. The emerging of leaves happen occasionally without any set time.
The leaves are used for making fresh flower arrangements
With time the older layers turn yellow and dry up. But they can be used in dry flower arrangements. They are soaked in water and twisted to give them any shape that is required in a flower arrangement.
There was a time when I would search for these dry leaves as I was involved in getting ready for a flower exhibition of my own and now I get a bumper of them and do not know what to do with them. I just consign them to the flames in the incinerator.

The long popular ficus trees belong to the fig genus. Although only a few are seen in cultivation, there are hundreds of species of ficus. They are native throughout the tropics, including Asia, America and Africa.
It is a house tree that looks good growing in the home garden. Décor is one of the main reasons many people grow plants within a home, and it's easy to see why. The look and feel of a living room, bedroom or even hallway can be transformed with indoor plants.
I think that Palm plants and shrubs bring empty spaces and large rooms, alive. Many can tolerate fairly low light conditions which allows them to be placed near doors, stairs, in hallways, and next to fire surrounds.
One of the huge advantages of growing plants indoors is the improvement of air quality and the removal of toxins from the environment. Most of you will be aware from school teachings that plants convert carbon dioxide into the air we breath (oxygen), so it makes sense to allow some space in the home for them to promote good health .
Nasa (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) created a clean air study for space stations and produced a list of house plants that do more than just turn carbon dioxide into oxygen. The list Nasa produced of various house plants remove large quantities of benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene from the atmosphere.
Each tree has its own purpose and so do palms. They are meant to add decor to gardens and avenues
