In the good old days when socialising was at its minimum children got joy mostly during Christmas time as that was considered to be the best season for everyone.
Planning started days ahead. While there were several things one did , putting up a crib had its own charm – there used to be competition among neighbours
A crib is a representation of where Jesus was born and it is believed that it was in a stable among cows and sheep. Giving vent to one’s imagination several thoughts go into it and one crib is different from another
There will be tiny fields of grass and other millets. For this sowing is done well in advance. Then there will be clay statues made of cows, sheep, the 3 kings, Mother Mary, St Josephcand baby Jesus.
Some create a tiny stream of water. There will also be a star that is believed to have shown the kings the way.
The statue of the kings termed Magi will be placed on 6th January the feast of Epiphany and that is the day it is believed the kings arrived with gifts gold, frankincense and myrrh
These days the cribs have been digitized in that one creates digital images and these are sent as greeting cards. There is no limit how far one goes making use of technology which they find easy and quick. But the real crib entails a lot of work.
The size of the crib can be from a tiny table top to a huge one covering one’s yard.
The happiness one gets getting together and contributing ideas makes this activity that brings in a lot of joy. And if competitions are announced that adds fillip to the efforts. Mostly churches announce these competitions.
I remember my friend’s gardener took charge of her crib and independently put it up. He got the first prize a couple of years ago.
Putting up a crib therefore brings out one’s creativity and also gives one an opportunity to get together and take part in the activity
