Introducing a few of the Super Fruits

Superfruits as the name suggests,  have all the properties that ensure a feeling of general well being, when consumed in any form. One common factor in all the fruits that could be classified as superfruits is that they have the properties that help fight free flowing radicals in the body, known as antioxidants. These antioxidants  help in controlling life threatening diseases such as  cancer, arthritis,diseases relating to the heart, inflammation, diseases of the brain  and acceleration of the ageing process. Each of these fruits would also have something unique, not found in other fruits.

It would be beyond the purview of this article to cover all superfruits that are available globally. A few of these fruits that could safely come under this category are covered here.

 

Sapota is one such fruit. It is inexpensive and even the poor can afford to eat it.  It is loaded with anti oxidants. The vitamin A in the sapota helps maintain good vision.. The tannin in this fruit helps fight viral diseases  and is also known to take care of the  Irritable Bowl Syndrome

Sapota  is loaded with fiber so beneficial specially for those who suffer from constipation. This fiber particularly also takes care of the mucous membranes present in the colon by getting adhered  to it. This process  prevents the cancer prone toxins from attacking these membranes

 

Though little known,  Canistel, also termed as egg fruit  is a fruit that is packed with  so many properties that it also can easily be classified as a superfuit.It smells good and has a pleasant taste.  It is rich in niacin vitamin B3 that helps control bad cholesterol.Rather than consuming  drugs to control the bad cholesterol it is better to do it the natural way. And Canistel does just that.

It contains fiber, carotene and iron among other properties which are essential nutrients to maintain good health. This fruit is also recommended for those who need to protect their liver from possible damage

Cherries no doubt are well known and are consumed more for their taste than for their health properties that one cannot but sing about.. But the little known tart cherry in particular  is being discovered as the power house of nutrients in any form. Apart from the high antioxidant levels that tart cherries contain the other components in the tart cherries, the phytonutrients in particular  work side by side helping the antioxidants to work better.  Athocyanins contained in the tart cherries have antiinflamatory properties which help with gout and arthritis.

 

Banana is one such fruit that is affordable and available almost in all countries. This fruit can easily be christened ‘supfruit’ as it is not only has properties that work as antioxidants it contains potassium so necessary for maintaining a healthy heart. The fibre in the banana helps the constipated. The vitamin E  delays the process of ageing. This fruit also has vitamin C. And vitamin C as is known strengthens the immune system in the body,  helps control the common cold, takes care of any urinary tract infection and is required to help absorb the iron in one’s body.

 

Noni is consumed more for its medicinal value than as a fruit that is relished. It is normally not eaten in its original condition but fermented. The juice thus produced is reported to be packed with such capabilities that can cure any disease that is visible on earth. It is however,  highly recommended for diabetics in particular.

Papaya is supposed to be a poor man’s fruit and  the rich are deprived of its benefits which are Vitamin C and Vitamin  B. It is rich with fibre and is an antioxidant.

All these and several other fruits grow in our garden.

    • Never tasted the sapato, canistel and noni. Don't even think I've ever seen them in our grocery store. Thanks for the quick intro.

    • Noni is a health fruit and is not eaten but a juice is made after fermenting it. I have several of those trees but sadly have not made juice so far The ripe fruits have a very bad smell and the fermenting process is quite elaborate.
      The cuckoo birds just love these fruits.

      Canistel again is not common and can be eaten when ripe. Some do not like its smell. I tolerate it.
      Sapota or chikku as we call it is common here. I love this fruit.

    • i do not like sapato, and not sure if the look of it is appealing too, for me i has to like the outside also before i try or eat anthing, but thanks for the valuable info. writers.
