Increasing incidence of Vitamin D and B12 deficiency in people

India is a country where most of the areas, excluding some high mountainous regions like in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and some parts of North-Eastern states have abundant sunshine, almost throughout the year. In many regions, people in fact have to look for cooling arrangements to help protect from harsh sun rays during harsh summers.
So, one can assume that people will have great exposure to sunlight throughout the year.

Yet, this is so glaringly separate and different from what is being increasingly observed in many people in India. The situation is in fact worse off among the more wealthier.
The condition is the lack of Vitamin D and also Vitamin B12 among the people. The reasons for Vitamin D deficiency:

1)People prefer to spend more time in Air conditioners and coolers, and hence spend lesser time outside in sunlight.
2)Many people, mostly womenfolk apply Sunscreen lotion to prevent sunrays from impacting their complexion.
Yet, often this prevents even good sunlight(some say the sunlight before Midnoon time: 12 P.M) from making their bodies produce Vitamin D.
3)Vegetarians or Vegans who do not eat foods like fishes like salmons, or eggs also do not get sufficient Vitamin D, as plant sources of Vitamin D are less. Some sites list Mushrooms and cheese as sources of Vitamin D, but some sites do not. So there is some confusion.

Vitamin B12 is also deficient in people and vegetarians and vegans seem to be the worse off here. This is not to justify eating Non-vegetarian food, as eating animal based products has also shown to cause problems of High BP and other ailments.

Hence, many people need medications and supplements to augment Vitamin D and Vitamin B12.
The beneficiaries seem to be doctors, and pharmacists. One cannot blame them totally too.
Yet now we see more preventive health checkups offering tests for Vitamins B12 and D.

So, perhaps we need to expose ourselves a bit more to the external sunlight, and with winters in almost two months time, it will be a bit easier too.

    • That is right, why not make some outdoor activities that can help us to vitamin D and B12. Besides, this is who we are, to be outside and not just sitting in the chair and facing the internet or watching movie. We have muscles to use them under the sunlight. This makes us stronger and better body. Vitamin D and B12 helps us a lot to be more active and lively.

    • These vitamins mentioned here are so vital for the human body. We need to to supply our body with the right vitamins through vegetables and fruits.

    • Yes. This is correct to say that the deficiency of vitamin-D is more in the rich. But this deficiency is found in lower and upper middle classes also. This is only due to non-exposure to the sunlight. As it is rightly said, rich people, spend most of their time sitting in Air Conditioned Rooms and the ladies who go out apply sunscreen lotions to minimize the exposure of their skin to the sunlight. This may also be observed that most of the psoriasis cases are reported to be both from the rich and upper middle classes. It is always suggested that they should go out and take their bath in the sea shore or on the river basin. They should take sun bath at least for 20 minutes. The Vitamin B12 can not be produced by the body. So it has to be obtained from certain animal foods. The reasons for the deficiency of vitamin B12 is due to excessive alcohol consumption, thinning of the lower layer of the stomach, immune system disorders, long usage of acid reducing drugs.
The overall beneficiaries are no doubt the Doctors and the Pharmacists. Why should we approach these people time and again wasting our money.? Sometimes approaching the Doctors nowadays is leading to unnecessary complications also. There are no doctors who are dedicated to their profession and are playing with the lives of people for the sake of money. The recent kidney racket in multinational hospitals in Chennai is an eye opener. People should learn and follow the guidelines on health properly in the interest of their own life.

    • I think this is a "fad" unless you are suffering form something. I am skeptic to believe on the medical reports as well. The reason for this is that earlier diabetes level which was considered normal is now considered high (100 +)
