If You are an Immigrant in the United States

Forget that plaque on the Statue of Liberty.

Forget all they hype you’ve heard about the United States of America.  That country that used to exist as a ‘beacon for the world’ is gone.

Forget that beyond Native Americans Everyone is an immigrant; whether their ancestors came across the Atlantic on the Mayflower, whether it was a steamer leaving France after World War I, or  a plane landing at La Guardia last week.

Everyone is America is an immigrant or a descendant of an Immigrant who chose America because they believed it was the ‘Land of Liberty’.

That is over.

Those years, those centuries of America accepting people from all over the world has ended.  It has been replaced by a regime so racist it will embarrass the most militant Boer.

America has slammed shut its doors, and is now rifling through the rooms to find… Aliens!

Today, ICE, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency is scooping up people who ‘look’ foreign. Whether Jamaican, or Cuban or Indian and especially Middle Eastern.

Whether in the United States legally, whether one has American citizenship,  Trump has unleashed his Make America White Again on the public.

This is real, this is now, and this is happening.

A woman from India, who has been in America most of her life and works as a social worker, carries her American passport with her at all times.   “…ever since this election and (Trump’s) rhetoric, it made me feel othered so quickly.”   She told CNN.

A Syrian refugee who was legally admitted to the United States said; “Deportation is our biggest fear…. If America kicks us out, where will we go? “

Oh sure, the Trumpsters don’t care about these people.  But many who supported him, who are not White, really white, might find themselves being sent back to wherever they came from.

Whether they have lived here since they were in diapers, whether they arrived with legal refugee status, they stand in jeopardy of being deported.
