This is a field that equates to social work except the way I see it human services has a bit more on the counseling side. Most social workers work to help troubled people dealing with physical needs like housing, employment, health care and a lot of other areas. Human services takes a look at the individual and how one solves problems when presented with problems of life.
This is the area I studied when I went back to college when nursing was getting to be a chore and also I began to do activity groups with the patients I cared for at the hospital. In this program I learned basic counseling/helping skills which I put right to work at my place of employment. During the human services program I studied human development, social work techniques, human diversity and introductory topics about human services/social work.
Human services helps people socially, economically, educationally, religiously and even at times politically. This is done with the help from the all levels of government depending on the severity of the issue. Social human service workers work with the individual but also with groups in order to solve issues that effect themselves and family in the community. Social human services works teach how to problem solve to make the necessary decisions necessary for a healthy (mental and physical) health.
Human service workers are there to help who ever may need help with various issues from dealing with addiction problems for drug and alcohol and other addictions, dealing with people on probation, unemployment issues, housing and many other areas that people require help and need various forms of assistance to get out of a jam through no fault of their own.

IMO I think the government is too involved with human services. Human services should be on a state to state level.
You are so right it should be state to state for the federal government seems to only give to well to do areas of particular states.
That is the kind of job that will drain you emotionally.
Many people started with enthusiasm, but in the end, they suffered from emotional drain out.
I agree with you, but I was mainly dealing with the area of doing activity therapy in a psychiatric unit. I also taught about their various issues and discussed their medications along with coping strategies. After 15 years I had enough. I just wish I could have tried to stick around five more years and I could have retired.
