Whether it is a political group or a street gang, you just can’t leave. Leaving is a non-insurable risk.
But there is a way to get out alive and safe.
Be pushed out.
Imagine you belong to this group. People are always pushing for a rung up on the hierarchy. People are always jealous of other people. So you’ve got that first tool.
Think of any group you belong to; there is what I call a ‘scorn’. This is a person that no one agrees with, is often ignored, is sometimes used as comic relief. The Scorn may be flakey, that is the kind of person who gets things wrong. You know, mixes up Saturday and Sunday, gets confused with directions, thinks the group agreed on Point One when they actually chose Point Two.
Becoming the Scorn is the next tool.
So here are two major tools, one is used by the group, and one is used by you.
You may have a minor position in a group and others want that position. You may be the one who is supposed to get a certain benefit, but others want that. When people fight you out of position or take your benefit, act a little confused about it, and start to move to the very fringe. Miss meetings, come late, leave early, contribute nothing, so that no one notices if you are there are not.
You don’t quit. You don’t drop out, you just become the Scorn. You have been shoved to the fringe, and prove you deserve to be on the fringe.
If you take your time, slowly missing meetings, coming late, being confused, being virtually useless, the organisation will work ‘around’ you. They may not tell you of a meeting, they may act as if you don’t exist any more.
Continue to behave as if you are a member. When you are summoned, you go without demurral. When you are not called, you don’t ask. Not at first. Later down, if you run into members, you could ask a question, ‘when’s the next meeting?’ or ‘am I supposed to do anything?’ so that you show interest.
If done right, imagine being in the centre of a cess pool, people pushing in, and you slowly being shoved back to the shore, until such time, you climb out.
