Decorating for the holidays can be tricky with children, but as every parent knows kids love to get involved. You and the kids will have a blast making these hanging snowflakes that can be displayed in doorways, from the ceiling or in windows. You’ll need paper, thread, a sewing needle and a pair scissors.
Step 1: Cut the paper into squares and then fold them corner to corner to create a triangle. Fold a second time to make a smaller triangle. If you like you can fold the paper a third time for more details.
Step 2: Snip pieces of paper from around the edges of your triangle. You can do small triangle notches or half circles. The adventurous can try for more complicated shapes, but simple shapes have a tendency to look best on the finished snowflake.
Step 3: Unfold the paper and behold your snowflake. Kids that have never made this type of snowflake will love seeing the result of all their folding and cutting.
Step 4: Make more snowflakes. They can be big, little or medium sized. Make as many as you want, even if you don’t use them all the kids will love having extra to play with.
Step 5: Lay out three to five snowflakes in a pattern; big small big small. Depending on the size of your snowflakes you may need more or less snowflakes.
Step 6: Thread the needle with the thread and then tie a knot at the end of the thread. Poke the needle through one end of the snowflake and then through the end of the next one in the pattern.
Step 7: Snip the thread and tie a knot in the cut end, holding the two snowflake together.
Step 8: Repeat steps 6 and 7 with the rest of your snowflakes.
Step 9: Use tape or tacks to hang your strand of snowflakes up.
Tips: Get a glue stick and glitter to make sparkly snowflakes.
Warnings: Don’t hang your snowflakes too low. Guests may not notice the decorations until they’ve run into them and become tangled in the thread.
