Homemade Fish Burger for Kids

During my childhood days, my mom used to make homemade burgers for us which was similar to McD burgers but with extra side ingredients.

I used to hate white cabbages and pickles plus yellow mustard, so mom would exclude them, she was the best mom!

Mom knew that I preferred McD’s Fillet O’Fish compare to Mc-Chicken but I was a little picky during those days.

I would scrape off the white tartar sauce which made the burger tasted sourish and remove the sour green pickles that resembled cucumbers.

Now that I think about it, I should had just swallowed the whole burger without hesitating because fastfood restaurant burgers are getting expensive compare to the 1980s.

I roughly remembered how mom homemade the fish burgers which I was awed that she could figured out the recipe when there wasn’t any computer at home (we cannot afford it).

Important Ingredients

# Fish

Choose the right fish for your homemade burgers. The best choice is Dory fish, Red Snapper or white cod fish which have more flesh, less or non bones.

Always remove the bones before mincing them because kids may not be able to pull out the tiny bones from the fish patties and choking might occur.

#Sauces

You could either use black pepper sauce or pre-packed black pepper mixture sold in the supermarket. Some prefer to use BBQ sauce but I would recommend you to try my homemade black pepper sauce instead.

Just mix light soy sauce, black sauce, oyster sauce and black pepper into a small bowl. Blend them well. Add in extra teaspoon of black pepper if you want to make it extra spicy.

Homemade Fish Burger

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp corn oil
  • 1 tbsp dried prawns-soaked until soft, drained and finely chopped
  • 2 slices of ginger-mince
  • 450g white flesh fish without bones-minced
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp light soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp black sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 2 tbsp corn flour
  • 2 burger buns-sliced into half, spread with butter and toasted in oven
  • Some lettuce or romaine salad
  • 1 small tomato-sliced
  • Afew slices of tomato
  • Any salad dressing or mayonnaise

Step by step instructions:

  • Heat up wok with oil, stir fry dried prawns with ginger until lightly brownish and aromatic.
  • Remove and set aside to cool off.
  • In a bowl, mix minced fish with all the sauces and black pepper together.
  • Toss in the fried dried prawns into the fish paste. Combine well.
  • Divide the fish paste into 8 equal portions.
  • Shape each of the  fish paste into round burger patties.
  • Pat both sides of the fish patty with a little flour.
  • Heat up wok with more oil for deep frying.
  • Slowly slide in 4 fish patties into the hot oil.
  • Allow the patties to cook until both sides turned brownish with crispy edges.
  • Toast the buns in the microwave oven for 5min.
  • On the half bun, place the lettuce, 1 slice of tomato and cucumber.
  • Then, place a piece of fried fish patty.
  • Drizzle with your prefered salad dressing or mayonnaise and season with a little white or black pepper.
  • Sandwich the burger with the other toasted bun.
  • Repeat the same process for the remainder burger buns and patties.
  • You will get 8 homemade fish burgers.
  • Serve with chilled beverages.

Tips:

Fish is high in protein and generally lower in fat compare to red meat.

Always use white fish flesh such as fish cod, Red Snapper or Dory fish.

Remove the bones before scrapping off the flesh.

You can prepare fish patties in bulk, wrap up with plastic cling wrap and freeze them for future use.
