Homeless…

Have you ever been homeless before?  Oh, I know when you hear the word “homeless” you might think of some drunk or drug addict living in the streets, right?  No one expects that it will ever happen to them, because you’re not a drunk or drug addict!!  You might want to think again!!

Homelessness can happen to anyone!!  It doesn’t mean that you have to be a drunk or a drug addict.  Some times “bad” things happen to good people.  I was a single person raising my children and I became homeless, actually I was living in a van at a lake.  My children took showers, they had food to eat and they had clean clothes and were going to school.  According to state laws though that is “child neglect.”  Even though they had a roof over their head, food in their stomach and were attending school, the state thought that was neglect.  Of course within 6 months I rectified that situation.

Then my husband and I were ,I guess you consider homeless, after the Workman’s Compensation case was settled.  We had a mobile home that we lived in and stayed in families yards for a while.  Because my husband had been a truck driver all of his life and he wasn’t able to do that anymore, and he still was doing therapy and had to find something that would be able to work at for his limitations of his injury.  Which he had a hard time finding work because he was either not experienced for or no one wanted to hire him because of his injury and they didn’t want him to re-injury himself.

So, you see, homelessness isn’t just for drunks or drug addicts…it can happen to families as well.  So the next time you see a homeless person you might not be so quickly to judge them.  They might even be a veteran who has fought in wars or it might be a woman and her children who lost their home, because the woman was trying to buy a home and was living in that home and the people who decided to sell the home backed out of the deal.  Or it might be a man that was injured on the job and now can’t find work because the only job that he did he can’t do because of an injury.

Homelessness is an equal opportunist.  It can happen to anyone regardless of sex, race or religion.

~Peace~

    • I think that being homeless has an extremely negative connotation in general.

As far as I know if you say that you need any help, that you are homeless, or out of a job, without money, getting kicked our of your rented place and that you or some of your family is sick... many people will not instantly offer you any help, or going to help you at all, or feel the need to offer you any technical solution if you request some help from them- actually they will judge and accuse you that it was all your fault and that you got yourself in a certain situation because you didn't plan, you are stupid and lazy, and only because of that you don't deserve any help.
Some the most overzealous people who were publicly promoting how we should be humane and offer a helping hand in reality were basically disgusted by the bare though of somebody's misfortune.
If you don't have a status, you have no friends.
Don't believe me, try it for a week. You will know who your friend is after that.

If you are a guy who gets fired from his work over anything and you have a family that you can't support, in the eyes of the others you are not a victim of a bad fortune, no, you are a garbage who is not capable to sustain his kids and wife and usually the best candidate for the divorce.
Because only the women can be unfortunate victims, men are not allowed to. I am not a sexist, but that's they way it works.

I was never homeless, I was out of a job many times, but I was never out of the cash.

    • Yes, there are cases in Singapore where people are homeless not due to bad habits.
Sometimes it is the law that causes them not to have a home because they are not qualified for this or that due to a minor clause.

    • I am sorry to hear that you had to go through such a low phase in your life. But it's indeed commendable that you still managed to send your children to school and were able to get out of the situation.
Fortunately I have not faced such a situation. Though I lost my job a couple of months back and I am still looking for a suitable job but my parents have supported me through this challenging time.
