The Hidden People of Iceland

Most of the Icelandic people hold on to the strong belief in the existence of the hidden people, the elves and the trolls. This is a rich story passed on from generation to generation and no Icelander could possibly deny this legacy. If you happen to explore Iceland, you will be amazed by strange formations that look ghostly. Many questions will cross your mind about those formations, but here are some witty tales to save your quiz- What are the Huldufól (The Hidden People)?

The Icelanders have put across two different amusing accounts to explain the history of the Huldufól (the hidden people).

In the first story, God the Supreme Lord came from heaven to visit a couple, Adam and Eve. The couple was so honored to receive God into their house and they were full of joy. They proceeded to show their Lord what they had including the children the Lord had bestowed them.

Unfortunately, Eve had just finished bathing a few of her children when God came, some of the children were unwashed. Feeling humiliated to show the unwashed children, she hid them and showed the rest.  God felt great when he saw the children, a hopeful generation.

However, due to God’s nature, He’s omniscient and He had to ask if all the children had been introduced and that there are no others.

Eve replied that there were no other children apart from the ones she showed.

At this point, it is crystal clear that God knew everything, Eve was just trying to cover up a forthcoming humiliations. He therefore declared to her, “Anything you hide from me shall also be hidden from men”.

The unwashed children became invisible immediately, taking to the moors, hills and rocks. From these new beings, descended the elves (Hidden People) but the rest of the humankind descended from the ones showed to God. Humankind can only see them if they are willing to be seen.

In the second account, the Icelanders told that a traveler got lost on his way and didn’t know where to go or what to do. He wandered up and down before finally stumbling into a strange hut. He knocked at the door and an elderly woman opened for him and invited him in. The lost man accepted the offer delightedly.

The inside of the hut looked good and was warm, he seemed to like it. The woman gave him a delicious meal and introduced him to her two beautiful daughters. The man enjoyed the open hearted reception he got and was soon shown to bed.

He then asked if he could stay with one of the girls to keep him company for the night. The answer was definitely, yes.

When they lied, the man got aroused and was compelled to embrace and kiss her. He turned around and placed his hand on her, but he was astonished, the hand passed through her! Even though he could see her right in front of him, he could hold nothing when he tries to hug.

He asked her what was happening as this was weird. The girl told him not to worry at all as she was a spirit. She then narrated, “Sometimes back, the devil became a rebel in heaven and was driven out into darkness with all his allies. But those of us who neither fought for nor against him were driven into the earth and ordered to abide by the hills and the rocks. We are the elves-the hidden people.

The elves can only live with their kind and no other race can join them. They can either choose to do good or evil and they shine in either choice. They are spirits and have no bodies like humans, but do take the form of humans when they are willing to be seen. I’m one of them and therefore, you are not able to hug me nor touch me.”

The girl finished her story and the man submissively slept and has become the source of this amazing story.

To this day, these hidden people are said to appear in the dreams of Icelanders. Majority describe them to be wearing the ancient Icelandic clothing which is green in color. They have constructed different formations for them.

For instance, the Huldufólk are elves believed to be everywhere. The Icelanders often build álfhól (small wooden houses) in their parks for them to dwell in. There are many more amazing formations in Iceland that have been put up for the hidden people.

    • Most country has their own story to tell like in the Philippines many people still believe with those kinds of mytical creatures we have aswang a vampire like creature at night who suck blood of their victims, the enkanto are often called the enchanted ones an elemental that can be playful with human, and some scary ghost stories that will make your hair stand on ends. I still remember when i was still a child i do really love to hear some spooky stories whenever my late mom talk about and wondering if they were true or just a part of someone's imagination. True or not, we cannot deny the fact that humans are not only the one who lives in this world but rather there are many mysterious things that we could'nt explain beyond human understanding.

    • Just goes to show. You're never too old to learn something new. Never heard of the the Huldufólk and definitely never heard either of those stories. Interesting. Seems like this should be made into a movie! One could really work this idea!
