He was in tatters but not his work

I spotted him on the road. He was not a beggar as next to him was his work of art.  Beautiful woven articles.  He had used bamboo strips to make these little objects.

These articles were for sale. I got down my vehicle and looked at what to buy. And there I spotted this huge goblet so o intricately designed.  He had used both sides of the bamboo strips. One had a slight brown shade and the other slightly lighter.  In contract the weave looked super. This man did not look educated but he was endowed with this talent and it reminded me of this verse

“Full many a gem of the purest ray serene

The dark unfathomed caves of the ocean bear

Full many a flower is bloomed to blush unseen

And wastes its fragrance in the desert air”

I did not bargain. Artist’s work is never bargained for. He quoted a price and I gave him the money.

It was not easy for me to take this huge object home.  Everyone on the road looked at our vehicle surely in appreciation. They would have seen this goblet lying on the road and hopefully they would have also now decided to get back there and get one for themselves.

I have a huge hall and this artefact fitted beautifully in there.  It was a conversation piece, literally. Whoever visited us noticed it and had a volley of questions, including wanting to know the name of the artist. I did not ask his name.  He was a non entity just someone sitting on the roadside selling his wares. He must have come from another State.  I did not ask.  I regretted this indifference on my part.  May be I could have taken him to some 5 star hotels where they could display his works of art and paid him well and perhaps also get a name?

I have regrets of not using my ‘reaching out’ quality but this time I did not and this will haunt me rest of my life.

I went back there the next day and he was not there – probably trying out another area.

    • These are the people highly neglected by the society. They take pleasure and work for it using their intricate hidden skill which can not be measured in terms of pennies and Dollars. They expect appreciation of their work rather than what they are paid. They show, explain, even discuss every detail of their art. Just a plate of meals is sufficient for them which many people are ready to offer but which they do not like. But, they accept the same more readily if a little bit of appreciation is also added to it. This is what makes them totally different from an ordinary seller/vendor of Art pieces. He will be in search for Art lovers than for the Rich. A poor but a lover of Art will matter him more than a rich approaching him with a hefty wallet.

      • You are right. He could have perhaps asked me to introduce him to some rich art lovers but he did not.
