This one isn’t a big SEO topic, but it’s a fun and creative topic that you can tie into other topics. This allows you to link to posts on related subjects, or if used on a site that allows affiliate links it could be an opportunity to insert links for perfumes and other highly scented products. It’s also practice for writing lists, which are very effective post types that do well with both human readers and search engines.

The challenge is simple:

1) List your 5 favourite smells, and why you like them

2) Craft a strong title that will draw readers to your post. You might want to try using a headline analyzer to help you compose a title that will appeal to readers and rank well. (I have a post that talks about titles that I will link here, once it publishes. There is a link to a free analyzer, plus more tips on factors that impact on your title’s effectiveness.)

3) Once you’ve published your post, please share the link here.

4) Remember to share on social media, using the #LiteracyBase hashtag and any other tags you think are appropriate to your post. The tag #scentmemories does work on FB, Twitter, G+, and Pinterest. There are also a large number of popular tags on FB that relate to the five senses or to smell/aroma. Use what fits for you! Tags like #writingchallenge, #writingprompt, or #amwriting should all work cross multiple networks as well.

5) Visit the posts of fellow writers. If you enjoy them, please comment and share them too!

I am not sure once I got going that I would be able to stop at just 5 favorite smells. This one may take me a while but these challenges are turning into fun and also helpful for me to come up with a blog post. I just submitted one on the first challenge and hope to be able to post one for the second one too. Now this one. Lol. I am not going to keep up with you guys at this rate. But it is fun and get the old juices flowing for some creativity.  I love the picture you used to. I can almost smell the coffee.

@morgoodie Now if you saw that image on Twitter or Facebook, wouldn’t it make you want to click? This is why @support emphasized the value of a featured image. But it shouldn’t just be an old image, as we saw with the post by @bestwriter when staff added an image because the one she tried to add wouldn’t upload. It has to be appealing to the reader 🙂

I look forward to reading your post – and if you can’t stop at five, just write a second one!

@ruby3881

Sadly we do not have an edit option where we as individuals have the freedom but we are expected to contact Admin – be it for typos, wrong image, lack of image, adding more content…………..

Coming to your challenge I cannot quite get you How does one  go about writing a blog?  Or is it here that you want us to post on those 5 favourite smells?

May 28, 2016 at 7:17 am

@bestwriter I have to agree with you that a preview and an edit function are much needed here. @support has said several times that the admin are expecting things from us, but often it does feel as if we are creating with our hands tied. We could also very much use an HTML view in the submit form, and not just the rich text or WYSIWYG view. This would save a lot of time and hassles over formatting, and encourage writers like me to submit more content.

As for the posts for this challenge, yes do submit them to LB! Then once published, you can come back here to post the link 🙂

That’s great.  The topic is wide enough for us to write about practically everything, from food to flowers to perfume.

What title would be effective if one were to write a blog?

May 28, 2016 at 9:25 am

Fun topic yes but emphasis is here is to make it  SEO friendly and also who would be interested to know what my favourite perfume is except readers at LiteracyBase – just a thought

May 28, 2016 at 9:35 am

@scheng1 Yes, there’s a lot of latitude! And there are some current news stories that have a longer shelf life (e.g. the new Chanel perfume that will debut in the fall) that tie into the topic. Plus, the Chanel model is Johnny Depp’s daughter & I hear he’s now in a divorce…. So lots can happen both in the post, and in terms of linking posts on interrelated topics.

@bestwriter The best title for your post will depend on what you write about. But for a list post, it’s natural to use a number in the title. I have a post coming out soon (hopefully) that will help more with titles. I promise to link once it’s ready 🙂

May 28, 2016 at 9:44 am

@bestwriter That’s an excellent question! First, keep in mind that the exercise is intended to help improve our writing skills & give practice with specific skills such as:

  1. Writing list posts;
  2. Writing effective titles;
  3. Learning to take a straight forward topic (e.g. smells) and identify a unique approach that will allow us to add value – a skill that is very useful when writing about current events and trending topics 🙂

So the SEO value isn’t so much in the topic (pleasant smells) but in how you choose to tackle it. how creative can you get?

There is also some value in a group of people all writing on a common topic – and the bigger the group, the better! Search engines would perceive that as a trending topic, especially if people tend to use the same keywords or tags. And that’s why I suggested some hashtags!

@ruby3881

Most experienced writers would prefer to write posts based on their own ideas and this ‘challenge’  approach will help those who are starved of ideas.

May 28, 2016 at 10:59 am

@bestwriter Actually, having to write on an assigned topic is a challenge even for experienced content writers. Most of the really excellent writers I know occasionally engage in such exercises because it keeps the skills sharp. Always writing on our preferred topics, with little or no editorial oversight, tends to dull a writer’s ability over time.

I think it’s important not to push oneself to write when something really doesn’t feel right, and so for example I’ve chosen not to accept @scheng1‘s excellent second challenge because it’s not a topic I personally care to write about.

I did write on how to spend a million dollars, which allowed me to practise a bit of creativity. It’s not a topic I would normally choose on my own, but I enjoyed being part of a joint project. And I think it benefits the site when we work on such challenges as a community.

It isn’t for everyone, though…

May 28, 2016 at 11:29 am

You said it. You write because it interests you and then it fails to be a challenge.

I always think of those famous writers who I am sure never borrowed ideas but enjoyed expanding their own.  I prefer to expand on my own ideas and I get flooded with them  but I restrain as seeing a single user’s post in a line users will lose interest.

There are sites like iwriter where each demand a different approach. The only reason why I go there is because there is good payment there. I have not gone there these days but I used to write for them.

You could do well there as you will get a higher rating. I am still at the standard level. Those elite writers there get as much as 30 to 40 dollars per article sometimes.

@bestwriter What do you think of iwriter, Grace? I signed up for an account there a long while back, but had a lot on my plate and never tried any of the assignments. Do they pay reliably?

I have an Expert rating at HireWriter, which I initially liked very well. I haven’t written for them in a long while, though. There was a pretty dry spell for the assignments. Lots were posted, but I had a bad feeling about the clients who were asking for the work. Too many rejections, the instructions were either unclear or expectations were unreasonable, etc. Some were asking for such things as fake endorsements on Amazon or FB. It just wasn’t the kind of thing I wanted to put my name to…

May 28, 2016 at 2:31 pm

I wrote about 64 posts there. A few got rejected. Some rejections were not justified. I almost missed getting the premium level thanks to one requester who delayed approving my posts which resulted in automatic approval which meant no stars. I always got 5 stars for most of my articles and that is how our rating improves. I am there at 3.6-  at 4 I can go to the premium level. I lost interest as I fought with Admin to give me 5 stars. I have not gone there since a long long time.

You I am sure will do well there.
