Funny Ladies(Why aren’tthey rushing to open comedy nights ?)

As a comedian who happens to be female i get asked why it is that we don’t see more women comedians in India. Comedy is booming(what with every second bar owner in town wanting us to perform for free), there are so many male comics, with more joining the fray everyday, so where are the ladies ?

The popular explanation for this particular gender gap is that men are funny and women are not .Apparently we don’t have powers: the ‘math gene’, the ‘science gene’commitment phobia gene’

We all know that women, unlike men, are useless at math and science but when it comes to relationships we are like industrial strength glue-willing and able to larch on to any old rubbish. OK that last one was just me but you get the picture – if women aren’t rushing to open mike nights it is because we do not have the one trait required to be a comedian. It would be like expecting a woman to stand  and pee-possible but awkward,inefficient and in the end not for us.

Now, as an open-minded person,i may have been willing to buy this theory but the fact that i know way too many men,many of whom clearly do not have sense of hum our.Never mind making a jike, halp of theme can’t take one; in the post several months most of the complaints against comedians have been brought by men.If so many of them are unable to properly identify when one of their own is cracking wise then why do we continue to believe they fell into the magic comedy potion?

This question at least is less of a mystery to me.Stand-up comedy is about making a scene,calling attention to yourself and opinions,putting yourself out there and taking a risk. It’s basically about every behavioral pattern women have been told to avoid. Proving to the world that we are funny won’t get us a man;being demure,quiet and letting them them think they are the funniest guy in the room will . Ladies,quiet and letting them think they are the funniest guy in the room will,Ladies, we have been throwing this match for far too long. It’s time we stopped faking it.

And you want to know the best part? This is one game you don’t have to be pretty or thin to win.Oddly the opposite of what you need to win the average guy’s heart.And really who wants an average guy ?
