Forget Diets And How To Eat Well For The Rest Of Your Life

I remember when I was younger I would collect all thest books about diets. I thought surely this new one would be the right one. Well, if not maybe this one. There was a fruit diet and South Beach, Weight Watchers, the Mediterranean diet, the Zone diet, Atkins, Paleo, Volumetrics, the Raw Food Diet, Nutrisystem, and the Macrobiotic diet. I’m sure you have probably heard of some of these. Fads are just that and don’t stick around long. Some more than others.

And, to their credit some worked for awhile. Some even longer. But, after a while the weight was back and I was stumped waiting for a new diet book to come out.

In truth, each one of these have some good points. Raw foods are good for us. But that one, like all of the others, became so boring.

But, you know what I have learned over the years? Good food in moderation is the trick. And don’t go on a diet and deprive yourself of some foods you love to lose weight. You will miss that favorite food and go off your diet to have some and then all is lost. The trick is have good food every day, eat all things in moderation and enjoy yourself. If you are miserable how are you going to committ to a diet? It’s not fair to you, your body or your goals.

One good idea is to make a menu a week in advance. Figure a day when you are eating light to splurge a bit with a dessert you’ve not had for a while. Try new things. Not the same old salad with the same old dressing. Try something new. Visit your farmer’s market on the week-end or go to the co-op and try a different vegetable or a new recipe.

Boredom and repetition is the worst two things you can do to yourself. Try new things and be open to something different. Be careful of fatty foods and don’t over eat.

Some things you can do is get your sauces on the side and use them sparingly. They are full of calories. Sides of fries are caloric too so try something different.

Drink plenty of water. Drink a full glass of water before eating your meal and you won’t be so hungry and over eat.

Don’t skip meals. At least eat a salad or a nutritious snack bar if you don’t have time for lunch. If you don’t you will be more prone to getting the early afternoon slumps and be ravenously hungry by dinner time. That is when we over eat because we missed a meal. Don’t do this to yourself.

Sometimes we have to play tricks on ourselves too. A smaller plate can do the trick so you don’t eat big helpings. And, if the piece of meat is bigger than the palm of your hand it is too big.

Exercise is very important. It helps you digest and is so good to your heart. Taking a ten minute walk after lunch is nice break from your day and it helps your body. Taking a yoga class is a good idea. Yoga can help to limber your body and help with aches and pains old age or over doing it can bring on. Back aches can be helped with some yoga each day.

Be good to yourself and keep that weight off.

    • yes. I do follow some principle when it is a matter of taking diet. There are no hard and fast rules that I follow.
I prefer breakfast very rarely. I take my meals at 10 AM and it will be in small helpings. It generally consists of a veg curry of any vegetable. Any Dal item is a must. A dish made of green leaves also is a must. Finally, my favorite is the Curd. If, there is a 'miss' of anything I do not mind but the Curd is a 'must' for me. It should have full cream.
For lunch, I prefer a glass of juice. If it is not available I take one or two varieties of fruits in small quantities. Sometimes I even miss it. But, at 3.00 tea is a must for me. I changed it to Green tea instead of normal one. This is a very good one for increasing the immune system of the body. If the boy does not find any fruits he will bring only two Bananas and prepare Green tea for me. I will sometimes bypass the lunch even if the work warrants so.
My lunch will be a little bit different. It consists of vegetable curry with Chapatis or Rotis. Generally, I prefer three. But, the curry will be in more quantity. This much. During night, I take a glass of buttermilk as it is very effective in protecting the joints. It eliminates all gasses in the body. I take buttermilk which resembles the Russian drink KEFIR. There will be more water than curd in it and is like adding only spoons of curd to 3/4 glass of water. I add some ginger and lemon in small quantities.
While taking a meal the only principle I follow is mix the curries more in small helpings.
I do light exercise early in the morning getting up at 5A.M.
During weekends, we go to a good restaurant and there we eat our choice of food items including butter, cheese, and cream. This is a day meant for games and good food.
The only principle that should be followed always is eat proportionate to the work you do.
