Many people will shut a page as soon as they see a pop-up. This is a protest against ads.
Sites should monitor how many users spend 2 seconds or less on their page. And if those 2 seconds were owned by the pop-up.
If there is a pop up on that page, the answer is simply, the advertiser has not only shot himself in the foot, he’s killed the website.
Many users today have their own methods; they activate adblockers.
Some ad blockers come with with the browser selected by the user. It’s a matter of a simple click, and most ads are gone.
Some users download ad blockers, pop up killers, etc. Their visit to a site will net the advertisers nothing, because the user doesn’t see the ad.
Many sites are not aware their users are addicted to ad blockers. Some sites are. Some sites actually post an advisory warning the user to deactivate the blocker. The user deactivates the site.
Everyone will agree it is the advertisers which keep the Internet what it is.
Beyond those advertising movies and products who don’t need other ads, most sites sell ad space and use the money to pay contributors to the site or fill their pockets.
No one is against ads qua ads. Someone wants to put an ad beside my article, I do not mind it, any more than in fashion magazines. which are mostly ads.
But when the Ad is a pop up which obliterates the site, or where the ads are so intrusive that they destroy the site.. no.
Many pop ups cover the page, many are some what transparent and to see the page one has to shut the pop up.
Where one has no vested interest in the page, shutting the page is first choice.
Where there is something like “Ten Things You Need To Know about….” and each of the ten are on a separate ad stuffed page, how many read all ten?
One goes to page one, full of ads, then page two… then elsewhere.
This benefits no one.
Ad Blockers have become what a life saver is to someone jumping over board. It allows one to view the site and not be annoyed by the Ads.
The fact that this will hurt the contributor who is paid by views and maybe clicks on the ads, is not measured, any more than the viewer, sitting in front of a television, gets up when the five minute block of commercials comes on.
It is well known that each 60 minute program is often no more than 44 minutes. Those 16 minutes of ad, often starting right after the opening montage, (for about five minutes) then the 2 minutes at the 15 minute break) then 5 minutes at mid point. 3 minutes at the 3/4ths break, are known to the viewer.
The show comes on with a few minutes of action, then comes the montage, and it is time to go to the bathroom.
Whatever is being sold is being offered to an empty chair.
Those who don’t move have a fast mute key; like an ad blocker, only one has to avert their eyes.
Yes, the Internet is ‘new’. It has only been available, World Wide, from about 1995, so compare to the television between the late forties to the early 60s.
But things move faster now.
To prevent ad blockers, less ads, to prevent leaving a site, no more pop ups.

If we can put up with commercials on tv channels there is no reason why we cannot put up with them here. As is known to everyone Ads generate revenue and putting an Ad blocker is wrong as the one who puts that ad blocker will get paid but through the efforts of others.
We don't watch commercials. They often play to our empty seat. Having ads which interfere in one's viewing of a site lead to people leaving a site. So many people use ad blockers. And they won't stop. Not unless the Ads stop attacking the page.
How will you get paid if there are no Ads on writing sites such as this? Do you have a plan?
Here is the quandary... A visitor comes. Before s/he can start to read, a pop up obliterates the page. The visitor goes away. Another visitor comes, ads disrupt the item to the extent the visitor goes away.
In both cases, the hit does not count because it is less than 30 seconds.
An ad that is to the side would be ignored and not offend the visitor. A good ad with a useful item that might tie to the article; i.e. talking about computers and ads to the side, or cell phones, etc. would be useful.
I guess the popping out of ads can be beneficial to any sites. It is a part to let the sites earn extra. I had seen so many ads popping out in LB at this point of time.
And people will close the page. People will come on to see what was written, be attacked by ads and pop ups, and go.
What is the natural response to a finger being put forcibly down a throat?
It is that simple.
Yet one of these comments still queries "How will you get paid?"
If you are starving and food is literally and forcibly being jammed down your throat how will you breathe?
Perhaps if advertisers aim to please instead if assault you'd find out.
