Experience the Pain

I am never a person who likes pain or can tolerate pain. Well, who likes pain? But I am sure there are some people who can tolerate pain better than others. I am certainly not one of them. I should say, I was fear of getting pain or always avoided pain as much as I could. I guess the most painful experiences I had were my three child births, and the first was the most painful among all. I went through the natural birth labor process, experienced the pain, and then only went for emergency c-section due to the complication, so I experienced the pain after the c-section as well, and it took me almost two months to recover. Ever since I gave birth to my eldest son, I told myself not to be fear of the pain, as the rest should not be as painful as the labor process. Hence, I did not fear to go for injection and wisdom tooth removal, though I was really scared of these since I was young.

I attended a Buddhist Zen meditation course last year, the master told us to experience any pain or itchiness when we are meditating, especially those that happen to our legs when we cross them. We just need to experience them and feel them, and the pain or itchiness will go off soon. I started to practice and notice the pain I have while I was meditating and also in life. I do not avoid them anymore, but just welcome them, embrace them, and they will surely go off soon. Now I always tell myself, this too shall pass. No matter what it is, it will pass.

I used to think we need to experience the pain or bitterness, then only we can appreciate the happiness or sweetness better. Now, I think differently. I just think whether it’s pain or happiness, it is part of our life, we just experience them. It’s just like when we are eating, whether it’s salty, sweet, sour or just plain, they are just different taste, and we just enjoy the taste of every bite. That’s the taste of life too.

When I was pregnant with my third baby, there were some pains and discomforts. As this might be my last pregnancy, I told myself to just enjoy every moment, whether it’s a pleasant or unpleasant moment, it’s part of the pregnancy, it’s part of an important experience in my life. I also tried to enjoy and experience while I was going through the c-section, and also the pain after it. I do not take the pain killer, as I can still tolerate with the pain, and I think it’s a good experience for me to feel the pain too. I can feel how intense the pain was and now it started to fade, though I can still feel the slight pain. Of course, it’s not really fun to feel the pain, but it’s a good experience to feel it and notice how it changes too.

I just think that when we have no fear of something, we actually enjoy more freedom. I do not fear of pain as much as I was, and now I feel much better when I deal with the pain. Again, it’s just part of our life.

What do you think of experiencing the pain?
