Is Experience Really the Best Teacher?

Many people say experience is the best teacher but sometimes I beg to disagree with this saying. Most times when experience finishes instructing you, you might not recover from that lesson. It would have been better for you that you had another teacher.

Have you ever been in a situation where you didn’t know what else to do, whether to turn left or to turn right? Probably a hard dilemma that you didn’t know what to do about.

One of the ways experience can become the best teacher for us is when we learn to harness experience from others and use it for our own good.

Let’s look at this: assuming someone doesn’t know that driving at a speed of 180km/h can send him or her to an early grave, would you advice that person to go try that out and probably experience what it would look like? Of course not!

But if that same person probably looks out and finds where something happened to someone who was driving at 160, no one will tell the person to learn that overspending kills.  He doesn’t need to experience it himself to know that,  oh it’s risky to drive on that kind of speed.

But most times,  experience can be the best of teachers. Like when your friend tells you about the latest ice  cream in town and tries to explain to you how sweet the taste can be.  You can’t know it except you experience it firsthand.

But you can take this lesson to your own advantage. Don’t always rely experience to be your ‘best’ teacher. Most times,  he can be both cruel and terrible. And the best identity to his tutorials is that your life will never remain the same after he finishes his great work on you. He must leave his indelible marks with you.

Do you agree with me?

    • I think I will disagree with you.on this one. I believe in the saying that experience is the best teacher. We are told that life is not a straight line we have to face hurdles to succeed. If it was indeed a straight line would we be having experiences no. And there are good and bad experiences, they are that to correct and earn us, so it's up to an individual to know what they are getting themselves into. This is why we have eyes ears and mouths, so that we can see hear and speak. No one can come up to you and tell you to do something that you know is going to hurt you,and you still go ahead and do it. And anyway we are always told that you have to experience something to learn but again there is the caution part of it that's my take on this.

    • Actually, at one point I will agree with you but at other point I will disagree with you. To experience they said is the best teacher because experience isn't what you passed through but what learnt from what you passed through.

So at one point, one can learn from what happened to other people and at another point, one can learn also from what happened to him or her.

Experience remains our best teacher. whether it happened to you or not. Once you learned something from the event, it becomes an experience to you because you can advice other from your experience.

Therefore, do not wait until it happen to you before you learn.

      Thanks for posting.

    • I think experience is the best teacher in dealing the reality in life. If we have weaknesses, we tend to practice for the improvement. These practices in life will be the way of being a good learner.

    • Experience can be a good teacher. But listening to those who have wisdom is better. I have found that if I listen to the advice of the wise who have already made the mistake and had the experience, that's an even better teacher and I have no regrets.
