Ever come across old couples saying, “Happy at old age home”?

Though old age homes support old people who has no one in this world, it gives a negative impulse in society as well, merely because old parents are thrown to live in miserable conditions by their old kids. Most victims also share the same experience with others, expressing their sadness to be away from own home and children. But have you ever come across people saying, ‘I am very happy living in old age home’? Definitely I had one experience most recently.

I am away from my hometown for many years, and visit my parents during vacations. Last time I visited my place to cast my vote in state assembly elections one month ago. I met many old friends, acquaintances and relatives at that occasion, and the meeting with an old couple strike me a lot. The couple is around 60-70 years, and in good health. In casual I asked them, where you are staying right now. “Old age home”, one of them replied. I became very much surprised.

They are middle-class people who own a good house, both their sons are well settled and the couple too are in good health. They also do odd jobs for their living. Then what’s the need to leave their home, their place, children, and live in a place miles away. I became confused in my thoughts. Yet I am not so close to them, to ask, why are you staying at old age home when you have a nice home here.

The couple said, “We are quite happy at old age of home run by Christian missionaries. When our children are away for work, and we feel bored. At old age home, we have a lot of friends to chat with, and we also help them in odd jobs in kitchen, and it is better to live there rather than living in hometown. Also whenever we want to go home, it’s possible. No tension at all”. I am not sure if they are hiding something. But I saw a feel of happiness on couple’s face which made me happy as well. Let it be true for all people who live their old ages in such homes, I really hope so.
