Eating Plastic; You Thought it Was Rice

Today, it was proven, that the ‘hoax’ of Plastic Rice, is no hoax.

The video making the rounds and appearing on You Tube is not a joke.   Whether the factory is in Vietnam, China or down the road, doesn’t matter. Plastic rice exists.

A woman right here in Jamaica was cooking rice. She noticed how sticky it was, how some of the grains stretched like rubber bands.

She used a match, and the rice caught fire and burnt just like plastic.

People thought it was only in China or other parts of Asia that plastic rice exists.  People thought it was a hoax.   But it is here in Jamaica.

Jamaicans eat a lot of rice.  Way back in the 60s and 70s it wasn’t an every day thing. Now, rice is eaten almost every day.

Besides the standard ‘rice and peas’ that is a Sunday staple, it has replaced most other starches.   You’ll rarely find a meal without rice in a local restaurant.

Television Jamaica was called in today to see an example of plastic rice.

A woman was cooking rice, or what she thought was rice.  Realising what it was, she contacted the Television Station, and the whole horrible mess was filmed.

It isn’t just in Jamaica, it has been found in Nigeria.  A test was developed there to check whether the rice is real or not.

Try this at home

1. Use a  mortar and pestle, mold a few grains of rice. If the powder gives a quite white colour,  it is okay. If it is yellow it is fake.

2. Burn some rice.  If it catches fire and smells like burnt plastic, you know what it is.

3.  Put raw rice in the glass of water and stir. If  it sinks, it is real, if it floats, it is not.

4. When the rice is boiling if it forms a thick layer at the top of the pot, it is ‘plastic rice’.

5. Drop the rice into very hot oil. If it is plastic, it will melt or stick together.

Plastic is not food.  Don’t eat it.

    • That's really dangerous for personal consumption. Rice is the staple food in the Philippines. I hope it will not be produced from my country. All I know, that some of the provinces in my country produced bountiful rice on the farm. It would be ashamed for the country to be known of such scam. I hope this concern is being raised in the Ministry of Agriculture in your country. With such concern, it can save a lot of people. It will not definitely jeopardize the innocent souls. Only if it is being addressed to the people-in-charge of importing crops from other countries.

    • I put in the 'tests' so just in case you want to be sure...

The Chinese have been dumping garbage here for years. About 3 years ago I had bought a pair of jeans. I was wearing them the 2nd time... just walking. Not fast. And the crotch tore.

I am not surprised about plastic rice

    • It is a very important which has been existing but not much awareness has been created about the subject all over the world. We always think it happens in other cities or countries and not in my neighbourhood and we may end up consuming something like this which is very harmful. As the world says no to plastics this is a new problem which has been cropping on and off in different countries. Nowadays everything is polluted and all companies has come with genetically modified food and more dangerous varieties of products on our dinner table. Polished rice is one more dangerous product doing the rounds. The rice millers try to do the polishing in such a way that they mix some chemicals and give a coating to give the rice a white and glossy look as it looks attractive and people will pay a higher price. The concerned departments of respective governments of each country have to check this and take stringent action against the culprits. A very useful article.

      • The Chinese have been doing this all over the world. In Nigeria it is a major problem. Now it is in Jamaica and may be in your country.

One has to be so careful, even when they buy 'fresh' vegetables. I always pick the ones that look a little handicapped because they are not G.M.

    • There are many countries now victims of fake rice and it originates from China.I do not know why Chinese want to scam the world. They are not afraid , why? they do not have God in their lives. There is no one to fear about wrong doings on earth. Even in their own country, they are not afraid for their country also processed illegal drugs. This is not only my own assumption and not really an assumption for these two happened in Philippines fake rice / plastic rice entered Davao city, but they never prospered especially this time under the new President they will surely land 6 feet below the ground should they not stop exporting fake rice to Philippines There are also many Chinese drug pushers jailed in Philippines ,thousands of them. They were caught manufacturing shabu.

    • That is one of the disadvantages of science. Genius people use their knowledge to cheat other people. All their consciences are totally gone.

They don't care about the effect of what they are doing. What matters is their needs of wealth.
