Drama as Dino escapes police arrest

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) said at about 12pm yesterday Senator Dino Melaye (APC, Kogi) while in its lawful custody and being taken for arraignment in a Federal High Court, Lokoja escaped from custody.

A statement from Police spokesman, ACP Jimoh Moshood said, “Melaye escaped when hoodlums and miscreants in two Toyota Hilux Vehicles blocked police vehicle conveying Melaye around Area 1 Round About, Abuja and in the process the senator jumped out of the police vehicle through the window and was rescued from the police men by hoodlums and miscreants to an unknown destination.”

“The police team re-enforced and trailed Senator Dino Melaye to Zankli Hospital, Abuja where he was re-arrested. The Senator would be arraigned in court without further delay.”

He said, “Meanwhile, one of the Toyota Hilux vehicles used by the hoodlums and miscreants in aiding the escape of the Senator has been recovered by the Police investigation team.”

Moshood said,”The Inspector General of Police has therefore directed a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the rescue and escape of Senator Dino Melaye from lawful custody.”

APC convention: Buhari asks govs to support Oshiomhole

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged All Progressives Congress (APC) governors to support a former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, for the chairmanship of the party. The president sought the governors’ support for Oshiomhole during a closed-door meeting at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja last night, a presidency official told State House correspondents.

The official, who asked not to be named, stated that President Buhari had resolved to back Oshiomhole for the party’s chairmanship position.

The party had fixed it’s national convention for May 14 in Abuja, where its new National Working Committee members would be elected.

Governors at the meeting included those of Edo, Kogi, Kaduna, Plateau, Adamawa, Zamfara, Imo, Kano, Borno, Niger, Nasarawa, Ogun, Oyo, Jigawa and Kebbi states.

The meeting, which started at 8:00pn, was still ongoing as of the time of filing this report.
