Dragon Fruit Farming

When you drive through the national highway in Ilocos province particularly in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur, you can find vendors selling dragon fruits along the national roads waving the fruits to the passing travellers.

This is the season of dragon fruit. The pineapple shape but smaller and colored red fruit with the flesh of red and white is considered to be wonder fruit by some people because of its believed to be medicinal abilities. Of course never forget the delicious taste of the fruit that is between too sweet and bland taste.

Five years ago when farming of dragonfruit started in Ilocos Norte. The dragon fruit farm in Ilocos Norte started it all and went popular to the people because of the taste and nutrition. But aside from that, this cactus plant is not that hard to grow.

All you need is the branch. During the first year, a one meter branch could be cut by the length of 6 inches to grow the young shoots. But today, with the abundance of the plant, one branch with length of 1 meter or more is just planted as it is.

Make a post with the length of 6 feet. Make it stand in the pit or hole. You may put an old tire of motorcycles at the top of the post. Plant the branch of the dragon fruit. After one month, new branch from that planted dragon fruit will grow. After more than a year when the plant is healthy, it will begin to bear flowers.

Flowers usually start in the month of May (in the Philippines). The flowers bloom at night and wither in the next morning. From that flower will become a fruit. One month it will grow bigger and after a month the fruit green fruit will become red indicating it is already ripe.

Ripe fruit do not rot easily. It could take days before the rotting.

Want to taste the best of the dragon fruit, put it in the refrigerator then enjoy the soft, jelly and sparkling taste of the dragonfruit.###

    • That's really a great experience. As a city boy, I had never tried to harvest any crops. It is all by seeing photos or watching it on TV. I am sure the harvester would have a good feeling in doing this.

It is not also common to have this kind of fruit in my city. If it does exist, it will cost an arm and a leg. I hope in the near future I would be able to experience this.

    • Have heard so much about this exotic fruit and still have yet to taste it. I have never seen it at the grocery store but it will probably be expensive because they would likely have to import it.

    • Interesting to learn about dragon fruit, thanks! I've never tried it, and I don't know if it's sold here. I'll have to research that!

When i went out after the mass was over, gone was the big truck selling dragon fruits.

      the country.
