Doing What You Like or Liking What You Do?

There is a huge difference between doing what we like and liking what we do

Not all are fortunate to be in a situation where they get to do what they like or live in ideal situations. There are exceptions where they are born with a silver spoon. Everything falls in place be it the college they want to study in, the subject they want to pick, the job they want to do, the house they want to live in, the partner they want to spend the rest of their life……………..

For most it is a situation where they have to like what they are doing or face the consequences.

Doing something grudgingly just because it is not the chosen task or a situation  can affect how the job is done or how the situation is handled  taking  a toll on one’s mental health.

Most that land at a Shrink’s door are the one’s who have suffered doing things they do not like. It is not difficult to guess why some commit suicide.

Earning is fine, passing exams is fine but the time we spend to reach there needs to be enjoyed.  Staying married just so that one obeys the law – in sickness or in death until death do us part is not the ideal way.

Students

It mostly affects students when they do not get the subjects they are interested in and are forced to complete their education picking any subject that comes their way.

Job Seekers

Here again some will accept any job that comes their way but do not enjoy it and there are some who will wait for something that they like but never land up with that kind of jobs –   perfect candidates for mental illness.

Relationships

Suffering a relationship is not the best way to live. One must learn to look at the positive side of each other and move on.

Learning to live with doing what one does not like but liking it eventually.

This is the secret of happiness. Be it a relationship, a subject one is forced to pick, or a job that one does not like……the list is endless, – it is imperative that one adopts a culture where accepting whatever comes one’s way, with a smile. It is after all a mindset.

 I have been there

I have never done house work as we have always had maids. It was not easy for me to step into the kitchen and wash vessels – the worst chore of all as far as I am concerned.  But with the knowledge that doing something willingly will not affect my mental health I have gone there and done that. Looking at the shining clean vessels gave me joy.

Doing what one does not like is kind of a challenge – a challenge to like it eventually.

Art of living is a course that one can look at and even spend time doing yoga and meditation. These approaches are sure to help a person to enjoy life to the hilt whatever circumstances they are in.

Here is a link one can visit and get some idea about what art of living is all about.

    • I quite agree that when we find ourselves doing things that we find difficult or distasteful in some way, there is always the opportunity to search out reasons to like the task. If we can find just one tiny seed of pleasure, we can nurture it and grow it into something much bigger.

Sometimes it's our own attitude that needs to change, and not the place where we find ourselves.

      • @Ruby3881 If we do anything grudgingly that eventually affects our health. Trying to look for that little something as you have pointed out does help. Washing vessels is what I am doing at the moment as I am without a maid for the moment but the fact that the vessels get a better deal is that little something that sees me through it

    • Yes, there is a great difference between doing something and liking something practically but is a tough question if we ask self in lone. We know we must worship God but hearts does not want to do so due to our day and night activities.

History has proven this isn’t universally true. Some of the most passionate, successful people are those who have sacrificed many of their needs to push toward one all-encompassing goal.

But the bottom line remains: not everyone has the luxury of dropping everything and taking a massive risk right now. If you have a family, you may need to do extensive planning to transition to a new field. If you live paycheck-to-paycheck, you may need to overlap your current job with your passion in order to eventually make a living through the latter.

This may seem discouraging—or it could seem empowering if it motivates you to take an honest look at your current situation and make a plan based on what makes sense given your unique responsibilities and needs.
