Helen and Richard were friends and course mates in the university. They got married immediately after graduation. The two got jobs. Richard with the Civil service and Helen with an oil company. Helen’s take home pay and private practices yielded heavy income. Helen met most of the couple’s financial needs because Richard comes home with a salary that could last only for one week. She met with high level men and women. In the midst of Helen’s friends, Richard stands like an errand boy. As days grew, Helen moved to a situation when her husband will not see her for days and weeks. She tells Richard that her company sends her to over night meetings. One day Richard went to buy insect repellent in a nearby store. Helen passed on her car into an opposite store. Two men started discussing about Helen not knowing that Richard, the man standing beside them, is her husband. One of the men told story of how Helen moves from men to men. They mentioned several influential men in the society who have been friends with Helen. Richard became furious. He went home that night and kept to himself not talking to Helen as usual. The following morning, Helen went to work, but called Richard that she will be spending two days in Lagos. On the first day of Helen’s absence, Richard went to his wife’s working place and discovered that she had no assignment as she claimed on the phone. As Richard was leaving the company gate, a workmate and friend of his wife greeted him. She asked Richard why he was in the office. He told her that Helen went for a two days assignment in Lagos. The woman asked Richard to enter into her car, and she drove straight to a hotel in the suburbs of the city. There in the hotel, Richard discovered that Helen his wife paid for two days for her man friend. Richard decided to check her room. He pretended to be a hotel attendant. He entered his wife’s room and met her on bed with another man. Richard stood there in the hotel room leaning on the wall. Helen and her “new man” sat up on the bed watching Richard. Then he asked Helen to shift for him on the bed. Helen stood up and slapped Richard before her “new man”. Richard left the room and cried home. The next day, Helen came home without shame, packed her belongings and went away. After a week, she went to court and sued for divorce. The court granted divorce and the marriage is now lost irretrievably”.
This is another story of disregard and disrespect in marriage. Helen toyed with her marriage. Richard suffered heart break. It took Richard another ten years before he remarried again. Helen has been hunting for men to marry her again but no one wants to be her next victim because her story goes round. Disregard and disrespect in marriage can bring a lifelong regret and sorrow.
