From Diagnosis to Living in Recovery

Doctors make a diagnosis in fifteen minutes that takes years to correct – Russel D. Pierce

The manner of giving and receiving a diagnosis of a chronic illness can have a profound effect on the course of healing from an illness. Much time, agony, and money could end up being saved by changing that message from a prognosis of doom that initiates despair to delivering information and hope which can start a cycle of healing.

Many adults who are alive today remember the day the World Trade Towers came crashing down and Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania, just as many who receive a diagnosis of a chronic illness will always remember the day of their diagnosis vividly. Unfortunately, that day is often remembered as one where their hopes and dreams were shot down – the day lights were dimmed or darkened forever.

If psychiatric medications are only prescribed with pity and focus on worst case scenarios, as is often the case, people will never take them! The time of diagnosis can be one of enormous healing power. The focus can be shifted to the positive aspects – the power of hope and the capacity for change. The mere fact of knowing what hurts you has healing value.

To help people take medication and cooperate with treatment, information can be delivered in a hopeful manner. It should be shared clearly in terms of diagnosis and treatment, including treatment alternatives. Don’t just share standard medication treatments but also alternative medication options. Be sure to include that living in recovery is possible!

Providers can really be helpful by sharing information about the diagnosis only to the extent that is helpful. Oversharing can overwhelm someone who’s just been diagnosed and dishearten them. It can be a challenge to do this but often simply putting the newly diagnosed in touch with others who share the same condition will do a lot to help them cope and begin to get into a mindset of living in recovery.

    • The problem is that there are people who are afraid of going to the doctor because they are denying that they may be really sick. Then when their sickness gets worse, they'd be in a state where they will never recover. But there are also people who can't afford going to the doctor because they don't have any money.
