“Diabetes” Disease That can Kill part 1

I’m always looking up on some ways to manage diabetes for a diabetic person. I’m having a hard time preparing food and choosing foods suitable for my uncle who has diabetes. I don’t know what kind of diabetes he have so I wanted some clear and tested ideas or suggestions from people who suffered the same. I’m also reluctant to give sweet foods or candies like chocolates or even drinks to him because of his illness that causes some complication as of this time. According to my research in the books and on the web, I found out that a diabetic person can also eat what he/she likes but with some precautions and in moderation.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, People with diabetes need to make healthy food choices, stay at a healthy weight, move more every day, and take their medicine even when they feel good. It’s a lot to do. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it!

There are three types of diabetes:

  1. Type 1 diabetes– Your body does not make insulin. This is a problem because you need insulin to take the sugar (glucose) from the foods you eat and turn it into energy for your body. You need to take insulin every day to live. This is also called the insulin-dependent diabetes.
  1. Type 2 diabetes– Your body does not make or use insulin well. You may need to take pills or insulin to help control your diabetes. Type 2 is the most common type of diabetes. This is also called non-insulin dependent diabetes.

  1. Gestational (jest-TAY-shun-al) diabetes– Some women get this kind of diabetes when they are pregnant. Most of the time, it goes away after the baby is born. But even if it goes away, these women and their children have a greater chance of getting diabetes later in life.

Down are the lists of the do’s and don’ts of a diabetic person or patient. This can also help you in making a better choice for your love one if they are having the said illness. I believed in the saying that it is better to prevent than to cure. Because when it comes to cure, you’ll provide more expenses than you never thought unlike prevention that it only needs constant attention to details that each of us must follow to avoid some of this diseases or illnesses.

DO’S:

  1. Eat regular intervals.

This helps keep the blood sugar levels consistent. Do not eat much in the morning then skip your snack time and lunch meals and then eat again so much more at dinner because this will lead to some illness such as ulcer when you always skip meals.

  1. Eat less and low in carbohydrates.

In the Philippines and other Asian countries, we usually eat with rice on the table. Most Asian people are not used to having only vegetable and salad alone. We can replace rice, bread and pasta with much richer and complete foods like oats, and wheat to help avoid the rise in the sugar level. Diabetic persons are required to eat low-carb meals like vegetables freshly prepared, salad, and egg white without the egg yolk but be sure not to eat all this in one meal.

  1. Eat rich in protein and fibre.

It is also highly recommended for diabetic person to eat portions of protein like skim milk products, chicken, fish, and egg whites and portions of fibre such as vegetables, fruits, salad and omega 3 fats that we could get from eating fish, walnuts and flax seeds in every meal to accelerate metabolism and to help control sugar.

  1. Exercise daily.

As everyone say since grade school, exercise is one of the best tool to fight harmful bacteria in our system. Exercise is also best for diabetic persons to maintain sugar level and also helps in making the body stronger. You can walk briskly, jog or do some lifting and yoga exercises to promote mental capability for not suffering from illness regression. In some studies, it is recommended for a person with diabetes to exercise at least 150 minutes in each week.

  1. Lose Weight.

According to some research, this is the most effective in controlling and managing diabetes. It will improve your blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and boost insulin counts. Having a very bad shape of your body like obesity makes you more less attentive and less active, it will also trigger the diabetes and will make it worst and it will also make you look old.

  1. Wear comfortable shoes.

People with diabetes can easily develop serious foot problems because of the nerve damage. Injuries cannot easily heal and are very prone to infections. Buy some comfortable shoes with at least cotton on the sides and on the bottom part where the foot touches.

  1. Eat Portions of Sugary Foods.

People with diabetes can eat anything as long as they are eating only portions of it and not the whole food in one single meal. According to some experts, don’t eat sweets everyday and must have the plan of skipping sweet for at least twice in five days.

  1. Practice Good Oral Hygiene.

Studies show that one of the most serious complications of diabetes is gum disease. It affects the blood sugar level if left untreated. Practice oral hygiene. Brush at least twice a day, floss daily before and after you brush your teeth, use mouthwash if necessary and visit your dentist once every year or every after six months.

  1. Have enough Rest.

Having a good rest helps in controlling levels of your blood sugar and maintains good insulin counts. People who don’t sleep enough will only impair the body’s use of insulin and have higher levels of hormones that cause hunger. At least Six to Eight hours is the recommended time for every human being to complete and regain strength.

  1. Drink plenty of water.

Being hydrated is important, especially if you’re managing Type 2 Diabetes since water helps in lowering blood sugar level by diluting your blood. Drink some water most especially at times that you sweet from exercising or doing some heavy tasks to avoid dehydration.
