Decorating with Duct Tape

How to decorate using Duct Tape

You might think duct tape is only good for patching pipes, but duct tape can be bought in many beautiful colors. Duct tape is easy to cut with a knife with a sharp blade and you can use scissors but they will gum up and have to be cleaned with a little alcohol.

You can give your chairs a plaid seat with duct tape. Choose your favorite four colors, or four colors to match your room. First unscrew the chair seat if you can. Trim the four colors of duct tape into 1-inch-wide strips, using the size of the seat as a guide. Starting in the middle of the seat, apply the strips of tape diagonally 2 inches apart, working toward the corners.

Use two inch painters tape as a guide to keep spacing even. Wrap the tape under the chair edge and press firmly. Remove painters tape, then apply stripes on the opposite diagonal following the same steps. Now, step back and admire your beautiful plaid chair.

You can also decorate your over head fans with duct tape. Choose the same color duct tape that you used on your chairs. If you can, remove the fan blades, that makes it easier to work with.

Starting at the blade closest to center of the fan base, apply strips of duct tape 2 inches apart. Use the 2 inch painters strips as a guide to keep spacing even.

For the rounded edge of the blade, lay a strip of duct tape over the end of the blade, then flip it over and trim the excess with a utility knife. Remove painters tape and reattach blades of fan to fan base. continue until you have finished each fan blade. Now look how bright and cherry your decorated fan and chairs are.

You can also do pop art with duct tape. Cut 2 inch squares of duct tape and place in the center of a 12 inch by 12 inch canvas panel. Buy it for 2.00 at a craft store.

Surround your panel with four 6 inch long pieces of duct tape in a contrasting color, slightly overlapping the edges to form a bigger square. Repeat with four 10 inch long pieces of your center color, pressing tape firmly down. Now, frame your beautiful pieces of art.

You can also dress up your switch plates with duct tape. Line up two strips of duct tape on the front of the plate. Trim to fit with your utility knife leaving a little to fold over the back. Turn the plate face down and cut out the opening with your utility knife. Isn’t that pretty?

    • My 10-year-old granddaughter and I had the discussion about "duct tape" or "duck tape." To our surprise, both words are acceptable. During World War II, the tape was called duck tape because water would slide over it like water off a duck's back. Later, because of its usage, it became to be called duct tape.
