Danger? Do the Penguin Walk

This sounds like a new dance, or a silly joke.  It isn’t.  It is a real safety procedure.  Many people have been seriously injured from simple falls.   Not being run over,  shot, simply by falling.

The WHO, (World Health Organisation) publishes that “Falls are the second leading cause of accidental or unintentional injury deaths worldwide. Each year an estimated 424 000 individuals die from falls globally of which over 80% are in low- and middle-income countries. Adults older than 65 suffer the greatest number of fatal falls.”

Think of it, a simple fall can prove deadly.

Suppose the floor is wet.   Or suppose you’re walking on wet rocks.  Or, you are living in a cold country and there is ice on the ground?   You have to go from here to there, over the treacherous terrain.  If you walk, and fall….?

You try to walk slow, putting down your foot carefully…. but!

But you still slip and slide… and crash…

Maybe you only bruise yourself, but worse… maybe you break something?

What to do?

The Penguin walk.

I am not inventing this, it has been tried, scientifically, proven, and it works.

Watch a Penguin walk see the tiny steps, the wobble?   Penguins walk like that because they live in cold, icy places, and only have two feet.   They’ve learned over centuries how to walk on such ground.   They make tiny, almost shuffling steps keeping their centre of gravity down, shifting their weight.

It works.

Some time ago there was a flooding, and I mopped up, and, of course, NOT doing the Penguin walk, slid and slipped.

Some years ago, in New York City, (Ice Land) I was going along the street, slid, and went sliding down the road.

Why?

In the first I was stepping ‘carefully’ put during the moment when right foot was off the floor, left foot slid.  In the second, I put down right foot it slipped just as left was rising.

Had I don’t the Penguin walk….!

Today I washed the floor and did the Penguin Walk and not for a .000001 of a second did I slip or slide.   I have now become expert in the Penguin Walk.   It may look stupid, but it’s pretty smart.

    • Thanks for sharing, it work for walking on the slippery floor and walking down from a steep or mountain, I think.

But, never walk like penguin in the usual walking pattern. My daughter is walking like penguin which made me headache. The doctor told me the reason she walks that way is because she are having a flat foot.

Thus, we have to give her some training to build up her small muscle of foot in order to have a arch in her foot, and no more penguin walk in the future.

      • I am sorry to hear about the flat foot, but I know that can be corrected. What I am talking about is the safe way of walking on slippery terrain.
