When is the customer always wrong?

I must be wrong for what I said to a CVS clerk today.

What did I say to make the clerk feel like I was stepping on her toes? I was walking out towards the front door from the pharmacy in the back of the store, where I dropped off 2 prescriptions.

I went to the front of the store. I planned on just walking out to the car before I looked at the floor and noticed a spill of ink I think, on the floor, at the entrance. In my mind it looked like it was possibly wet and that someone might step on the ink and get it on their shoes or worse, possibly slip and fall.

So, I went to the counter and told the clerk at the front register about it.

She was unable to see the ink spill on the vinyl floor tile where I pointed and indicated that it was not important because she would not bother to look over the stack of candy items at the register to see what I was talking about.

What’s worse is, a lady who was in line to pay for a purchase with her child standing beside her, took a look at the spilled ink and said out loud, “It’s dried ink.” So that said, I added, to the clerk at the register, “I guess you can get someone to clean it up.”

Then that lady with child said out loud, “Hey,” with emphasis, “It’s not your job to tell her what to do about that floor!”

I told the lady that I was just giving her my 2 cents and that I was a regular at this store and that the lady at the register knew me. “I come here at least once a month and everyone here knows me.”

The lady at the register looked over at the lady about to check out and made an expression like, (I don’t know this guy)

Well, I was angry by both the lady at the register for dismissing my comments about the ink on the floor but embarrassed by what the lady with the kid said as if to reprimanding me for bothering to open my mouth about it in the first place.

She wanted me to just shut up and leave. I can tell this has become a very common thing in business dealing with the public. Joe Public, that’s me, Anthony Davis, should not bother talking to a clerk at a store or a librarian at the library about dirty floors or water or ink spilled on the floor, much less talk politics.

So I think I have learned something here today, that is, “If you go out in public, keep your thoughts and opinions to yourself and go home on your computer and blog about it on social media instead.”

Sounds like a good deal, but I still intend to contact CVS corporate about it because I was disrespected because the clerk showed indifference to my concern over a spill on the floor which was an obvious eye sore much more importantly, a possible accident risk that might cause a fall.

As far as that busy body lady with her kid, she just over-reacted, is all. I will over look her for that. I am sure she felt empowered by speaking up against my opposition to the possible risk of falling by slipping on the entrance floor.

Should I just accept the fact that some retail stores just don’t care? And is it better to adopt a similar mental mind set of indifference to the state of affairs of business when I enter into an establishment or do I need to be more direct and show concern about things that matter even if I risk being ignored, treated like a crazy maniac or should I be reserved, indifferent, and uncaring about the world around me, not to mention being human?

    • I think it is the other way around for me. Some clerks in malls or any establishments are arrogant in dealing with customers. I know that " the customer is always right". It does make sense with such phrase. Since some clerks trigger the anger of the customers because of their wrong doings.

      • I was polite and direct but essentially ignored by the clerk as if I should mind my own business. I regret ever going into that store. It's not about who's right and who's wrong. It's just that I was pointing out a fact that I thought mattered.

    • lol!
Yeah, sometimes, it is better to pretend that nothing haad happened and just blog in your rants here and share online, shame those 2 ladies and the kiddo instead.
By the way, remember to name the store too!

    • Depends. When there is a monopoly of some sort; i.e the only petrol station for miles or the only supermarket they think they can treat us as they please.

    • The customer is always right but there are times the customer just have to respect him or herself and abide by the rules of any store one finds himself.

    • The best thing to do is to report that matter to the manager or supervisor. That sales clerk might be so tied cannot anymore think of the nice solution. There are many stupid people this time. How nice to insult those crazy ladies. Maybe they are used to dirty floors. They might have dirty minds hehehe.Next time never care.

    • You know what people say the customer is always right but I refute that because there are instances where customers can be so wrong, but because you don't want to be seen in bad light you decide to keep quiet. Honestly speaking some people can be very ignorant. Making things very hard for everyone. Me as a customer if I saw something wrong in a store I will say something about it I won't keep quiet so it's up to the owners of that establishment to make the place look nice and organized otherwise you will loose your customers because of your negligence and ignorance so sometimes this saying works both ways.
