The containers to be used
Containers of different materials can be used for growing plants. The most commonly used containers are those made of plastic or clay. They are easily available in the market in all shapes, sizes and colors. Plastic containers are cheap, light and are available in different sizes, colors and shapes. However, they may not be durable when kept exposed to the changing environmental conditions. It is also not sturdy enough for growing very big plants. On the other hand clay containers are durable and cheap but may break easily with careless handling.
Apart from those available in market, one can use the various containers lying wasted around at one’s home. For instance, my mother made good use of the broken filter, old buckets, tubs etc by growing flowers. One of my neighbors is successfully growing herbs in the plastic packaging containers. Even my wife seems to have taken to the art of planting in pots and waste boxes, or whatever she fits in her plans.
Decorating containers is important
If you look around, you will always find something suitable to grow plants that will keep you busy and your interest will grow as the time passes by. In any case, any containers that are being used for growing plants should have sufficient provision for water drainage in the containers. In case of metallic materials, holes can be made using a nail and a hammer. For plastic materials, it can be done easily by passing a heated iron or steel knife at several places at the bottom of the container.
When selecting the container one should also keep in mind the plants that are to be grown. Some people do not bother about the needs and size of the plants and simply try to grow them in any container that they can find and later lament that their plants didn’t grow properly. We have to remember that in a container, the growth of the plant is restricted. So, for those plants which have long tap roots or are tuberous, a taller container would be ideal. But for those plants which have fibrous roots that spread around, a shorter container with broader base would be more suitable.
The place for keeping the containers
Selecting an appropriate place to place your container is as important as selecting the container itself. Generally, when placing the container, we need to consider the needs of the plants, its appealing value and our convenience. The right place to keep it would be where the plants get just the right amount of sun. It should also be a place where it can be easy for maintenance. In case of heavy containers, it would be better to select a suitable permanent place. Let’s get started and do the wonderful things in our own house, balcony and rooftops.
Please note that if you want to give your containers an artistic looks, factors such as the colors of the flowers, its sizes and that of the leaves, the heights of the plants etc also matters a lot. By the way you can convert your love for pot gardening into Career in pot Gardening
