You’ve probably never heard of one but they play an important part in services for those with mental illness. These programs are run by people with mental illness to help others like themselves. They provide referrals, peer counseling, and support groups to those in need – sometimes completely free of all charges. The Consumer Operated Program that I work for is currently one of only five in my state.
Many people come there each day just to feel a sense of community. Attending support groups and participating in activities is completely optional. Some people choose to hang out in the outside area and smoke, others to nap in the social room or watch TV. No one is pressured to do anything they aren’t comfortable doing. The majority of people do choose to participate in the many support groups offered though.
Over ten support groups are offered each week. Topics range from healthy living, to art and music, to self esteem. Nationally known support groups such as Depression Bipolar Support Alliance and B.R.I.D.G.E.S are also held. The groups are facilitated by volunteers who have been members of the program for at least three months. Participants also gain points on voucher cards for attending groups, which can be redeemed for free snacks or sodas through the program’s honor shop.
The Consumer Operated Service Program fills a much needed gap in mental health care. Many participants, like myself, have insurance that won’t cover intensive outpatient treatment but they need something on a frequent basis to give them support. Once a week counseling often isn’t enough to fill the need, but inpatient treatment is too extreme. The program allows people to come when they feel the need and participate to the level they need to get help, without feeling controlled or threatened as is often the case in typical mental health systems. If these programs were to expand, I believe we would see a lower rate of hospitalizations for those with mental health issues around the country.
