Common Houseplants That Can Help To Detoxify Your Home

All plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. With the convenience of many household products on the market today also comes the release of gases and chemicals that can be dangerous. As well as having your home testing for radon or mold it is a good idea to think about introducing some common houseplants into your decorating scheme that can help to reduce such dangers from the home.

Did you know that there are houseplants that can lift your mood, reduce allergies, reduce the change of headaches, improve sleep and even decrease your blood pressure? Chemicals are released into the air by paints, cleaning products, plastics, toilet paper, and other products you may have in the home.

By reducing the amount of chemicals in your home you can help to put a stop to many health issues. For instance Benzene is also a natural part of crude oil, gasoline, and cigarette smoke. Formaldehyde is a ingredient in nail polish. The others listed below are in household and industrial cleaners and emit toxic amounts of harmful gases and synthetic materials.

Researchers say that one houseplant is sufficient to clear the air of 100 square feet of home or office area.

Here is a list of ten common houseplants that help to rid the living area of toxic elements:

Spider Plant– Clears carbon monoxide and benzene from the home.

Snake Plant– Clears out formaldehyde which is used in nail polish.

Aloe Vera– Clears benzene and formaldehyde.

Chrysanthemums– Clears benzene.

Lady Palm– General air purifier.

Chinese Evergreen– Clears out toxins and air pollutants.

English Ivy– Clears out airborne fecal-matter particles.

Heart leaf philodendron– Clears formaldehyde and many other air pollutants.

Boston Fern– Clears out formaldehyde.

Peace Lily– Clears formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene, toluene and xylene.

It is also a good idea to check and see if any other types of the plants you might bring home are poisonous. If you have pets it is a good idea to check with a local vet to be sure of any plants you have around your animals are safe.

    • This is very interesting. It has not hit me so much to think that plants can actually do all this things. If i knew of a plant that is able to reduce headaches that would be a plus for me. I also keep having headaches, and sometimes am not very sure what causes them. I can recall sometime back when my dad was still alive, he used to love a plant that used to smell so nice at night. The flowers used to op3n up at night only and the smell was heavenly. It could spread all around the house when the window is open. Somehow I must say my dad used to look very relaxed as he sat back on the sofa watching news hahaha. I remember that with nostalgia. As for my mum age she used to have her flowers too. I was particularly very fond of one it made me feel very warm, i dont what other word to use to describe it. Then there was also the money plant I don't know if anyone knows that plant but it's very popular in my country. People associate it with money. Funny enough it's actually true. You may find when you have money or your going to have money the plant blooms, when you are broke it withers. Be the judge of that me i have seen it happen because I have the plant at my house. Thanks for sharing this I have learned something new about plants.

    • I love plants, and always make sure I have live plants inside our home; at the sala. I also have snake plants which I place near our bedroom's window. It is interesting to note that a plant can clean a 100-m. space inside a house. Thanks for this information.
